The OREO cookie, first manufactured on March 6, 1912 turned 100 years old yesterday!
North America's most popular cookie, or "OREO Sandwich", as it was referred to in a 1924 advertisement was originally two chocolate wafers with either a vanilla or a creamy lemon filling. Soon after that they stopped making the lemon OREO.
Not nearly as secretive as "how they get the Caramel in the Caramilk chocolate bar, the following video describes the OREO making process.
Who named the OREO, and what did it stand for is unknown. Oreo means "nice and perfect" in Greek, was this the genesis for the name of this iconic cookie?
OREO cookies are made differently in Canada where we use coconut oil in the manufacturing process.
My favourite cookies are 1) Peek Frean's Fruit creme, and 2) Dare's Lemon Creme.
Are OREO's your favourite cookie? ... and if so, how do you like to eat them?
Good morning Chris,
Wow the Oreo is a 100 years old! I remember as a kid I use to separate the sandwich and eat the inside or I'd dip them in milk! It's been a long time since I have had one :).
Good morning Chris. I read the title and had to read the post, and by the way, I am now craving an entire bag of Oreo's. The video is too much. Enjoy your day and think of me on my way to the supermarket to......you got it get Oreo's.
When I was a kid my mom would have to stop me from eating the entire bag. I loved those things. Now I know you shouldn't eat them at all because of all that sugar and other " stuff " they add to them these days.
Anything chocolate is my favourite cookie Chris! Would have loved the lemon filled Oreo's. Funny you just posted on Oreo's, just spotted them in the store yesterday with a sprinkled cream filling to celebrate their 100 years! Usually I eat one cookie piece, then lick the cream down and then finish the yummy baby off! Mmmm.
Chris, I just had some homemade oreo cookies today! Yu-um! When the boys were young, they'd eat the center and I would eat the cookie part. We were quite a team!
Dorie, if I had two, I would twist and create my own "double stuff", way before OREO came up with them =)
Jeanne, My son, Alec (aged seven) loves them. He can have two for dessert if he chooses.
Al and Peggy, we all have our favourite ways... I have not seen the anniversary cookies yet, but will keep an eye out for them.
Homemade oreo's sound great, Wanda. You must remind your son (Scott) of that when he comes home.
I know they are delicious, but, oh, that "stuff" inside them is so bad for your heart and arteries. I would love the recipe for the homemade ones, though.
Wow, this is timely. I just had my first oreo ice cream cookie of the year today. It had been in the convenience store freezer too long (probably all winter) and was hard as a rock, but I still enjoyed it once it warmed up in my mouth.
As for cookies, I would have to say that PIMs are my favourite of all because the remind me of my grandmother. Very sour. Just kidding. They are one of the few sweet treats that survived the crossing over from the U.K. and retained its British flavour.
Howdy and evening Chris
Chris my friend, this sure is a mighty fine blog post about Oreo Cookies! That sure was a mighty fun video to watch.
May the warm rays of Sunshine of happiness always find their way too and fall upon you and your family!
Have a good one

I was peacefully looking at my salad until I read your post Chris...now I have to go to the store.
Chris - coconut oil ..... maybe we should have eaten a lot more Oreos as kids ..... it is supposed to be good for people in regards to Alzheimer's ..... check out "Dr. Bruce Fife bok Stop Alzheimer's Now"
Chris ~ Bags of Oreos have about a 24 hour shelf life in our pantry. although I am not a big cookie fan my kids and hubby sure eat my share. : )
Chris, Oreos used to be one of my favorite cookies. I liked them dipped in milk or coffee. Thankfully, my sweet tooth is gone and I no longer eat cookies of any kind. If it returns, I will likely be back to Oreos.
