Well, we finally got snow on the mountain. Last weekend’s storm brought in about four feet, which was much more than anywhere else in the state. We got a second dumping over the past several days, which brought an additional 5 feet. It is odd to say, but getting too much snow can be bad for Pagosa business. We need to have enough snow to ski on, but not too much in surrounding areas like Durango, Santa Fe, and Taos. A marginal snow season elsewhere brings many out-of-town skiers to Wolf Creek, where we usually have the most snow in the whole state!
This is the height of the shopping season. I did a fair amount of shopping downtown last weekend. My goal is to shop locally as much as possible, but of course, there are certain items which are not available locally. Online shopping, as well as Durango and Farmington are second options to fill the stockings.
I’m excited about the holiday season and all the fun it brings. Laurie and I are looking forward to our son, Patrick, and daughter, Heather, coming home for Christmas. Patrick is a banker in Denver, and Heather is a teacher in San Diego. I’ve gotten a start on decorating for Christmas. The inside is done with the exception of the tree, but I still have to do the outside lights.
As far as the real estate market goes, there is little change. Locally, we still have a soft market. I am becoming a little more optimistic about the national market - not that sales have picked up, but the business news is somewhat upbeat, hoping for another Fed interest rate adjustment and talk of freezing some of the adjustable mortgage rates. Neither of these items will fix the problems out there, but hopefully they will boost consumer confidence, which is what I think is the main problem. The consumers who are able to buy are just afraid to do so.
Well, that’s all for now. I hope you and your family have a great holiday season. I also want to send out a special “Thank You” to all our troops overseas.
Spread a little joy out there!
