The Curses of Getting Older

I had to share this with you fellow Active Rainers - it's humbling to me.

I went in for my annual contact lens exam, and no big changes, got my trial pair of new lenses. I wore them for a few weeks and noticed I was grabbing my reading glasses all the time; not just some of the time.

While my reading glasses are cute and fun, I thought "Do I really want to buy a full year's worth of lenses if I have to grab my reading glasses all the time?".

No, I thought, I really don't want to do that.

So, I went back and am now trying bi-focal contact lenses. Yes, I'm definitely over 40 now!

It's an adjustment that's for sure - but heck, I can read more now with one type of vision correction.

When I wore contacts I had one for reading and one for distance.  It took a bit of getting used to. Then I had laser surgery and being able to read street signs without glasses was a real shock!

I did not like the bi-focal lenses. I just had my eyes corrected to 20/15 and do the reading glasses bit. Some people think that I look "distinguished" in reading glasses. Yeah! Right! Over 40 right on! Hate getting old but it is better than the alternative. 8)

Its not the reading glasses that make me look old...its the wrinkles, and the gray hair.

You are all too funny!  We thought the problem was our old TV (words on screen were blurry!) but noticed that our new flat screen was blurry!!  The new TV in the living room has the same problem also!   We don't want to admit that it must be our eyes!!  Gotta go and get them checked.

Happy Holidays,

I had laser surgery 4 years ago.  After 3 years I wasn't seeing well.  Long story short, I'm developing cataracts in both eyes and now I'm back to glasses!  But..vision changes within 6 mos of that and I had to get stronger lenses!!!  Gee whiz, getting new lenses every 6 months can get expensive!

I tried bifocal contacts for one day and almost gouged my eyes out. Noone recognized me without my glasses anyway, so I finally figured out how to get those contacts out of my eyes and went back for new eye glasses. Continuous, transitions, designer frames, non-glare, etc. Had to do at least one transaction just to pay for them but they don't make my eyes bleary and red!

Thanks for all the comments!

I've not had the chutzpah for laser surgery, and probably never will. I've worn contacts since I was 14, so I'm used to them.

Kathy: sorry to hear your bifocal contact experience was so negative; these are definitely thicker lenses, and require more re-wetting drops, but I like being able to read!

Oh Carol, where do I begin.  I still wear the contacts for vanity sake and put my readers over when I need to...whenever I need to read!!!!!  I had the trifocal bifocal thing removed from my glasses because they drove me crazy.  I just take my glasses off when I need to read since I only wear my glass at night after I take my contacts out.  Loved your blog although the reminder that we're all getter older hurts like *($*)(*$!
