Negative Places, Negative SPACES.....A Multi-Part Post by Feng Shui Long Island

Negative Places:

Years ago, long before "The Secret" came out there was a book I picked up called ‘You Can't Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought' by Peter McWilliams and John Roger.  It made an impression on me then because I believed it; it makes sense.  More and more people believe it now because they've heard more about the toll, emotional and physical, that your emotions and energy can take on your body.

Several years ago while working with my Energy Healer I was reminded again but with more emphasis.  EVERY SINGLE THING we read, hear about or watch can take on toll on us, physically.  We fill ourselves up physically with negative energy and it becomes stored in our bodies, causing DIS-EASE.  I was formerly a CNN junkie, used to watch Reality shows and read the newspaper.  And it took its effect on me.  Negative people truly are toxic to some of us.  I have long since stopped reading all the bad news and try to surround myself with good people and positive energy.

I believe many of you feel this way and only bring it up to advise you that if you are always watching shows, reading things or are surrounded by people that carry negativity, it likely is taking it's toll on you as well.  It IS True, You Can't Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought.

What ARE Negative SPACES?  Just as we aren't perfect, neither are our homes.  The ideal Feng Shui home would be in the shape of a square, encompassing every area of the Bagua.  A call the other day from a concerned client about to purchase an L shape Condo made me think to share this with you.  Homes, Businesses and apartments are NOT often in a perfect square; do we simply not purchase them, even if we love them?  Can we "correct" areas that are missing without compromising Feng Shui or its principles?  My own opinion from what I have seen over the many years of this work is that a client's own CHI or Energy is the most important factor in determining whether to purchase a new home or business.  So unlike many consultants I will often tell them to go ahead with the purchase, we can fix (inexpensively---Feng Shui is primarily INTENTION) areas that may be missing.

Feng Shui Bagua

She wanted me to review the pictures she had and the floor plan and several things struck me.  It was a lovely apartment near a very nice place to live, a place I visit often in the summer.  For a condo on Long Island, the price sounded too good to be true.  But the woman had misgivings, not only because of the shape but because she couldn't see beyond the current homeowners unkempt (I am being VERY kind here) look.  Let's just say the place needed a good, solid cleaning and painting.  When I look at a space I can see beyond what IS there into the potential of what COULD be there.  And yes, she loved it.  Feng Shui Long Island

We have methods to inexpensively create areas that aren't there.  Mirrors are one way; lighting is another, or what we call "squaring off an area."  This particular apartment was an inverted L, meaning she was missing her "Wealth" area and part of her "Family" area.  I always ask if they love the space and my own opinion is always honest.  If I were looking right now, I would buy this place.  And simply create the spaces that are missing and change the energy.  I am happy to say she put an offer on it and it was accepted.  She has been pre qualified and hopes to be able to go to closing soon.

Feng Shui Long Island

Both negative PLACES and negative SPACES can be changed.  Some we simply stay away from while others we can embrace.

Carole~ I hope you can share with us in future posts how to fix this type of layout.  This is a popular layout for ranches here in NJ, with the bedrooms being in one part of the L and the living space in the other part of the L shape.

Carole- November of 2006 I stopped watching the news. In January of 2007 I stopped watching CSI and all manner of violence on t.v. I do not read the paper. I skim through the Honolulu Online Star Bulletin. IF something is important enough I will hear about it in passing or my kids tell me.

I also got that book You can't afford the luxury of a negative thought. I think I will go get it off the bookshelf and skim through it. We watch the secret often.

Our home is a perfect Feng Shui fit for us, our front door faces east, we live on a good small street that is not a culdesac and not at the end. We have no poison daggers coming at us. We got rid of our lamp post in our front yard and that promoted less fighting in our household. We have a large square but then one side heads back off of that square which is all the maternal section and I just remodeled one of our bathrooms back there in a nice soft shade of pink to help me be more grounded. It helped alot. I won't bore you with a whole book on our house. Katerina

Carole...I think avoiding negative thought in this present environment is a bit difficult! If we want to at least attempt to do some business..we have to know what is going on.

Believe me I wish I could turn away...but it's in my face every day!

Can I go to Lauries with you? A vineyard tour sounds just about right...

Oh Carole, I can't tell you enough how important this post is to me.  Every day I wake up, I choose to keep the negative out of my life.  Sometimes when that negative tries to enter my space without welcome, I find myself frustrated, as I'm feeling right now in my life.  I can generally find a way to get rid of it.  For some reason, this one that has entered, I can't seem to get rid of it.  I know that power has to come from within me and I will tell you, physically this type of stress takes its toll.  Every time I turn around, I find myself physically sick.  That's why I turn to ActiveRain and read posts such as yours to help me through this.  Thank you my friend, I'm truly grateful to you.

Carole, another wonderful topic and eloquently expressed.

I used to live in the Middle Teheran from 1973-1978.  One major lesson I learned was that the US news reports and papers embellished on all the negatives in order to gain listeners and sell papers.  Most of what was shown or printed was grossly exaggerated and sometimes totally incorrect.  I have not bothered with reading newspapers or listening to the bad news and radio commentaries ever since.

I do, however, subscribe to laughter and the lighter side of life.

Thank you for mentioning You Can't Afford The Luxury Of A Negative Thought.   To me, that book is absolutely head and shoulders above all the other "positive thinking" books out there including The Secret

Peter McWilliam's writing (Peter grew away from John-Roger at a later point and stated that the writing in You Can't... was all his - and having read most of Peter's other works, I have no reason to doubt him) is practical, pragmatic, and filled with a delightful gentle humor.  So many positive thinking writers just seem to take themselves way too seriously for my taste.

Anyway, that's my humble opinion.  :-)

Your post inspired another thought, too, and sent me off on another tangent.

I'm just a beginner in learning about Feng Shui, but, yes, I am a little familiar with the idea of squaring off missing spaces with a mirror, light or wind chime.

Anyway, my thought:  Some people in life are like the mirrors or light or chimes used to "cure" the space.  Their purpose is to "fill in the missing space" and "cure" the negativity of people around them.

Sometimes, God help me, I feel like I'm supposed to be the "cure" for the people around me.  And it ain't always an easy job.  :-)

Lisa, I have seen people have such good fortune in what some others might consider "bad" luck.  I absolutely believe that a person's evergy is stronger then Feng Shui (and together they're phenominal!).

Rosario, They are with some Western methods.  It can't be that all oddly shaped homes have bad Chi.

Deborah, Yes, we use the I Ching every morning.  I'm guessing since you noticed it that you use it as well...I think it's incredibly helpful and wish more people would learn how to use it!

Sal, I decided to do two posts in one :)  One of the things we consider in Feng Shui is the shape of a home or business.

Loretta, Thank you, I enjoyed writing this post, I just wished I was a picture wizard like Cheryl :)  Some of my photos leave a lot to be desired...

Jo, Negativity in any form can cause some of us more problems then we are aware of.  I avoid it like the plague because I have to!  The book series sounds wonderful, I haven't heard of it but glad you're enjoying it.  Living in Harmony with Nature...Funny, something my next post relates to.

Carol, You are a wonderful, positive force here in the rain!  The first part of the post is now something I'm very careful of though.

Laurie, How about we hit them AFTER :)?  I didn't realize they were still open this time of year!  Then again I guess they would be, I'm sure people LOVE those wines as gifts.

Jackie, You can fix any space you bought so don't worry!  It's ok to be down and talk to your friends about it, I'm speaking of the people that almost seek out and dwell on the negative in everything, they can be toxic whether it's the news or something you read.....I stay clear of it and feel better!

Sally, Some people actually like to live with a negative or "poor me" attitude and I can't be around it.  Also the news and reading upsetting things actually takes a toll on my health.  I'm much more careful after learning that.

Lisa, There are many different ways and each one may be different because each client is different.  Some of the things I mentioned are some commonly used one but in other places, depending on the person, there are so many things (or a combination of things) that we do to "create" a space that was missing.

Katerina, I never get tired of hearing about your home, it's the way ALL people are supposed to feel and sadly, many don't.  That book was one of the first I remember reading on changing your attitude and thoughts to create what you want....and it was terrific.  I don't know how I had forgotten about it when I did my book MeMe.

Joan, Unfortunately you can't avoid all of it but I was an actual CNN Junkie, I heard nothing but bad news all the time.  Negativity stores in our body and truly does create dis-ease and then it is difficult to release.  Only learn what you need to know and stay away from the rest of it!  It's just fine with me if you come to Laurie's, wine sounds good, doesn't it??

Julie, Unfortunately it has probably happened to us all.  Negative energy can get stuck in our bodies just like it can in our space and it needs to be released.  I have been quite ill in the past and have used one form or another of natural treatments to get it out and my health came back.  Yoga, Tai Chi or Chi Qong are all things you can learn and do yourself...

Gail, I had no idea you lived in the Middle East--and for so long.  I know the news here focuses on the negativity because some people love to watch and listen to horrible things.  I'm not one of them....and neither are you!

Diane, You're right, so many buyers are sometimes afraid to purchase a home they absolutely love....because of Feng Shui issues.  Many consultants would disagree with me but I've seen it over and over again and know that when they love a place they can overcome anything!

Cheryl, That book was a while ago and I had forgotten that I read it and loved it.  It had an impact on me at the time because it was speaking of changing the way you think long before it became popular.  One word of caution to you is that people are drawn to those who are compassionate and if too many people come to you with their problems, it might take a toll on YOU.  Just watch for any signs of energy loss and if you get it, you need to step back for a while.

Lizette, I keep amethyst by my bed for health.  It is for healing I believe.  Try adressing your wealth with a plant (not spikey) or something that moves...

Carole:  As for me, I can honestly say that shows like CNN and almost the majority of the stuff on TV definitely has a terrible impact on me.  I was just surfing through the channels a minute ago and this is what I noted:  murder movie, cops show dealing with a drunk, court TV about another murderer, news shows all negative, subway beating, children shot getting off school bus in Las Vegas, and it goes on and on.  I turned the TV off.  I thought, there's not one lighthearted, inspirational, something to make you laugh show on TV right now.  That stuff definitely impacts me physically, mentally and emotionally.  Your post makes perfect sense to me and I am always in awe at just how knowledgeable you are.  I do think you have definitely found your calling.  Thanks for another great post.

Very interesting post. I've never really thought about the shape of a home on the inside or the outside. All I have ever thought about is whether or not I like it. Certainly all the homes I have bought to live in have been fairly instant decisions. The homes "spoke" to me - not in the literal sense you understand so please don't send the men in the white coats round to my place!

Hi Carole,
We are surrounded by so much negativity, it is difficult to escape!  I agree that it is draining and takes a toll on our energy level and health.  Thanks.

Good morning Carole,

Nice post. I find if I watch to much news or read to many negative stories I start dreaming about bad things. But I am a news junkie too. I go online and read the papers across Canada. I know now that when I am not sleeping well to lay off the papers for awhile.

Deborah, I'm going to write a bit about it but knowing you, you would love it.  It's difficult to explain but it's Eastern Philosophy based on The Book of Changes.  It gives wisdom to questions...(That's the abbreviated version).  It's a tool to incorporate in your life that helps.

Donna, My healer was right, it is nothing but bad news and it was difficult for me to leave it off but it has a profound impact on you in all areas that you mentioned. I stay away from all drama because it's just not good for you!  On sensitive people in particular, it is toxic.

Jackie, You're Welcome!!

Simon, Im not sending any men to your home, I believe it.  I am very sensitive to the energy in a home and it's what you FEEL.  Once I was so uncomfortable I did the Consultation in reverse and blessed it first instead of last.

Cynthia, It's difficult to escape but I have felt much better since I stopped.  MUCH.  I know some things will find their way into your life that aren't positive but I do control what I can.  It's taking care of YOU--a good thing to do.

Trace, It's a hard habit to break but if I can do it, you can.  Otherwise we surround ourselves with it.  If it's something I need to know, I will hear about it one way or another.

I can tell I did not needed to knock down a garage to sell my house!!! Is the energy and the intention always what succed.

Alos I agree with yoy that we are the energy we surround, waht we eat, what music we hear. My son improved a lot after being inserted in a new group of friends with different energy at all. Thanks for all

Maria, You certainly have the Best Energy and the Best Intentions.  And I believe you chose that particular condo because it already had many Feng Shui elements.  I am SO glad to hear your son is doing better, we are just never fully happy when our children aren't!

Kim, Thank you, energy is important.  I believe if some people realized what they were radiating out they would change the way they look at things.  Some thrive on being involved in negativity while others find it toxic.  I guess it's what makes the world go round.
