As a Realtor, I understand the necessity of having a valid driver's license. As a retired police officer aware that New Year's Eve is fast approaching, I ask that everyone please think about their upcoming festive plans. I'm not trying to preach, but I've seen the results of driving under the influence of alcohol. There is no quicker way to ruin your life than to be arrested for D.U.I., or even worse, ruin the lives of someone you may kill as a result of driving under the influence. It can happen, I've arrested other police officers, doctors, school moms, clergy and assorted other professionals and non-professions alike.
In this day and age, it does not need to happen. There are many options:
- Volunteer to be a designated driver.
- Call AAA. They have a program where you can get your car towed and get a ride home.
- Call your local police department. Tell them you would like a ride home and that you think you may have had too much to drink.
- Check with your local M.A.D.D. division. They may have a program to get you home.
- Call a taxi... "Who cares what it cost!" Do you know what a lawyer charges per hour?
- Stay at the house where you are celebrating.
- Give your driving age children a note that says "If you drink, give me a call and I will pick you up. I promise not to discuss this until the next day and I will not raise my voice." Believe me if you say "not my child," you're living in fantasy land. It is part of growing up and part of peer pressure. On the flipside, if they are staying home, have them pick you up. What a better example of responsibility? Remember, after they turn 21 drinking is not illegal, so the examples that you can instill on them when they are under age are worth their weight in gold!
Happy New Year! Everyone Please Be Safe!
