Moving House? Top 5 Moving Tips

Moving house is already stressful for so many reasons, and packing, moving and unpacking can amplify that stress ten times over.  But there are things you can do to make the move as smooth and efficient as possible, and here are some moving tips that could help.

1.  Make a list

Having a checklist of things to do, people to call and things to follow up on can save you a lot of time and hassle, and is a way to ensure that things don’t get forgotten.  Include things like transferring utilities, water, cable and internet, and completing a change of address form with your local post office.

2.  Important Moving Tip – get boxes ahead of time

Start collecting boxes as soon as you find out you’re moving.  Boxes seem like a small thing, but without boxes, you’re not going anywhere.  Whether you buy them or collect them from your local grocery or liquor store, get boxes in a variety of sizes made of sturdy cardboard and some heavy-duty tape to secure the tops and bottoms.

3.  Label!  Label!  Label!

Label each box after it is packed.  State the contents inside and what room it belongs in, or who the items belong to.  Make sure you label the box on at least 3 sides and the top.  It may seem like overkill, but the extra effort will have been well worth it when you aren’t wondering what items are in what box, and which boxes go where.

4.  Keep Necessities Separate

Have a separate box for things you’ll need in the first couple of days after your move like toiletries, some clothes and a few household essentials.  Having these items handy will save you having to dig through a ton of boxes to find your toothbrush and a pair of clean undershorts.

5.  Arrange for Movers

Arrange for movers or a truck you’ll drive yourself at least 4 weeks in advance, as these things tend to book up quickly.  Also, make sure you have cash on hand to pay movers on the big day.  If you have friends helping you move, let them know exactly where to be and at what time.

As difficult as moving can be, it can be made a lot easier with a little planning and effort.
