Have a Bathroom that Needs a Cost Effective Updating?

Looking for a cost effective way to update a bathroom with fiberglass tub/shower? After years,  fiberglass  can stain and become spotted. You can clean and scrub with all sorts of chemicals but nothing seems to help.

The situation with this bathroom (see pictures below) is that the tub and shower were looking pretty nasty. It also was a bone color which really needed to be updated to a white.  Replacing the tub was not an option without putting out some big bucks. The bathroom doorway was not wide enough to fit a new tub through, so the door frame and part of the wall would have to be torn down and that pushes the cost way up. In researching I found a great cost effective alternative.  The estimates alone for replacing the fiberglass shower were $1100-$1700. The total for having both of these refinished was $848.00. Though there were quite a few companies out there that did this sort of thing, most only offered a 5 year warranty. This refinishing has a lifetime warranty.

Do you have outdated colored tile in the bathroom? It can be costly and labor intensive to pull the old tile down and replace it. If you are looking to sell your home, this is not very cost effective to do. The colored tiles can definitely be a turnoff to buyers that are looking for a more updated home. This process can be used for tile as well, I was told. The caulking is sealed at the same time and you never need to worry about having to re-caulk.

I am always interested in finding cost effective ways and alternatives for my clients to update their homes before selling. Before hiring anyone, I would definitely ask questions regarding what method they use, how long the company has been in the business and doing this type of refinishing, and what is the warranty they offer? This particular work was done by Carolina Resurfacing.

This is just something you might want to check out. If you have any great cost effective ideas or suggestions, please let me know.

Have a great day!

Wow that made a difference. I've never heard of a lifetime warranty for refinishing before. That's impressive. Years ago I did a diy kit on a couple of projects. It turned out well but man did that stuff take allot of prep and boy did it stink. Better left up to the pros especially with a warranty like that.

WOW! I would have never guessed this cost under $1,000. It looks really good and can make a huge difference to a buyer, that's for sure!

Rob, I wouldn't be brave enough to try to do it myself.  You are right about the smell being  terrible. In researchig i found that most companies have only about a 5 year warranty. The man that did this job is the owner of Carolina Refinishers and does all his own work. He says when he does it, he knows that it is prepped correctly and the work is done right. It was definitely cost effective with that warranty. :)

LaNita, It made a drastic difference. I know I have been in and listed homes that had the pnk, blue, green, or gold tile from the 60's and 70's. The man that owns this company says that they can refinish it in a similar way as well. Though doing something like that may not increase the value of a property, it would definitely help the saleablity of the property. I do understand that the retro-colored tiles are actually popular in some of the larger cities. This just offers an another option for folks and I though it was pretty cool. This company had a showroom in a different city that I really want to go check out.
