Crossing Paths With Bear While Hiking In NM
Almost Wordless Wednesday
While hiking in NM we crossed paths with this bear. It appeared to have just come from it’s hibernation, looking thin and scraggly. We were too close for our comfort as he walked about ten feet in front of us, knocked down a dead tree and began clawing out grubs to snack on.

Not sure who crossed whose path but I'd yield the right of way to the bear. :)

John, That sight would definitely get my attention! See what you mean about scraggly looking. Guess that long nap takes a toll on them!

Any creature that is so tired and hungry it will knock over trees and eat grubs... uh-uh, I'm staying WAY back.

That reminds me of a close encounter I had at a forest camping trip several years ago. Really wakes you up, doesn't it?

Now this is definitely too close for comfort! I'm glad you thought to take a picture because I have to admit I would have had one thing on my mind ~ how to get out of there!!!!

Good Morning John, Glad to know that you were safe... We have a lot of bears around my area too. Very scary! Still, you were able to get the photo.. a true photographer. LOL
John~how fortuitous that you not only got to see this lovely wild creature but had the wherewithall to get a marvelous photo, too! He did look skinny....glad he was just wakin' up or YOU might've been the "grub" he would go after!
John, this would be frightening to stumble upon! He does look a little thin!
John- way too close for comfort for me. At least when I'm walking "with" my alligators they're in the water and I'm way up above them on a boardwalk!!!
John, talk about close call! Our local fox news in Los Angeles reported A women heard rumbling downstairs, when she went to see what was going on she was staring at a bear in her refrigerator! Imagine that, I think she must have totally lost it! I wonder if she thought to take a picture!
You never know what you're going to stumble over when you go for a hike in the woods with John McCormack. I'm glad you had your camera at the ready John. Next time, don't forget when to run.
As most of you know I always read and respond to your comments and input individually. I have been on the fly with continuing education, working with buyers and holding transactions together. Forgive me for saying a one big THANKS to each of you for your comments and input on this NM Bear post.
Being a tad hearing impaired this is how I finally saw the bear as it slowing crossed in front of us. I was in the lead with Debbie hiking behind me. She spotted the scrawny bear and said, “ Mac, bear to the right.” I not hearing her continued onward. Again, “ Mac, bear to the right!” Still I did not hear her. Finally Debbie yelled out; “ BEAR ON YOUR RIGHT!” I looked up just as the bear was upon us we stopped walking put our arms out wide and continued talking loudly to each other. As the bear was headed to the tree he soon downed we both grabbed our cameras and began shooting pictures of him. He seem to ignore us as he munched on those tasty grubs. So now you know the rest of the NM Bear story :)
