CT Food Bank -- Spring Walks Against Hunger

It’s hard to believe the numbers.  Almost 49 million Americans, which includes 16 million children, are hungry or without adequate food.

In CT 1 in 5 children go to bed and to school hungry.  CT has approximately 400,000 at risk of being hungry.  1 in 7 households can't afford the food they need.  It’s just unbelievable.  What is even scarier is that with rising gas prices, food prices have been  going up as well creating a dire situation in the already depleted food banks.

To help ramp up the distribution of food to local soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries and adult and children day care centers, the Connecticut Food Bank will be holding the 2012 Walk Against Hunger on three different Sundays this spring in Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury CT.

The three 2.5 – 3 miles Walks Against Hunger will take place at 1 p.m. as follows:

Sunday, April 29                Greater Bridgeport Walk Against Hunger, Seaside Park, Bridgeport

Sunday, May 6                  Greater New Haven Walk, College Woods Pavilion, East Rock Park, New Haven

Sunday, May 20                Greater Waterbury Walk Against Hunger at Library Park, Waterbury

Organize a team, get support from family members, friends, and colleagues and pre-register online at the new Walk Against Hunger website.  Use the ‘Walker Tools’ to help attain your fundraiser goals.

Every dollar raised will help the Connecticut Food Bank provide three meals to someone in need.

So, get your walking shoes ready, organize your team, and come out for an easy 2.5 – 3 mile walk for a great cause. Why not make a difference in the lives of fellow residents of CT who are struggling to put food on the table for their families.

This is great Barbara. I think it is wonderful when the Realtor community gets involved on a local level to help individuals. What a great encouragement! Thanks for sharing the needs of this organization.

Laurie -- We have the power as realtors on Activerain to get the word out about community or state events. The awareness building is phenomenal. I hope it works well with this Walk Against Hunger.

Ten Peaks -   You can be here in spirit! Thank you.

We participate in local food bank drives here also.  But isn't it a shame in a country as rich as ours, that children are going hungry?  It's great that charities and charitable people help, but children shouldn't be dependent on the very sporadic whims of others for their meals.  If we care so much about "life", how come they don't matter after they are born?

Leslie --  It's unconscionable that children go hungry in THIS country. I never really knew the breadth and depth of the problem until I started getting into and supporting community affairs through my real estate endeavors.

Barbara, that number is much higher than I would have guessed.  This is a worthy cause and I hope it gets a lot of participation.

Barbara, it's good when people in the community come together to help others.  We have several food banks and organizations feeding the hungry in our area as well and it's a very worthy cause for all involved.

Barbara, those are staggering figures, and hard to believe this happens in our own Country!    Our food banks are low too.    This event would be a great one to attend!

It's too bad that the news media doesn't focus more on what we need in our own country. I don't think enough is said about hunger here. I hope this is a great turn out, Barbara.

Hi Barbara,

The hunger statistics in this country are absolutely disgraceful. It hurts me a lot to think of these folks and children who go to bed every night hungry. These walks against hunger are very important and let us hope these events arise a whole biunch of mioney in Connecticut. good job of telling the community about the walks.

Happy St. Paddy's day to you and your family. have a great weekend..
