Heat recovery ventilators recalled for fire hazard

Certain motors in heat recovery ventilators could pose a fire hazard, Ontario's safety authorities said Thursday.

About 253,753 Venmar heat recovery ventilators, produced and installed between 1991 and 2001, are being recalled in Canada, say Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority and the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office.

The models involved in the recall include:

Venmar brand, models AEXX, EARC, 1XX, 40X, 40XXX.
Venmar AVS brand, models 1.X, 2.X, 30XX, 55XX.
Flair brand, models 30, 30XX, 55, 55XX, 85115.
VdnEE brand, models 10, 1XX, 100XX, 20, 20XX, 90.
Guardian by Broan, models 100X, 200X models

The X digit is used in place of a letter or a number.

Consumers are asked to turn off and unplug their ventilating units and contact the company for repair.
