To celebrate the arrival of March Madness (along with our affinity for iPads over jock straps), IMSD is pleased to announce the Geeky Sweet Sixteen tournament! Over the next two weeks, it's up to YOU to cast your votes as the titans of social media face off in a battle of silicon sweat, blogging blood, and IPO tears.

Game 1 results are in! Facebook 78, Google+ 6

A resounding “I told you so” rose up from the social media world today as Facebook pounded Google+ 78-6 in the first game of the tournament. In the first 2 minutes of the game, six of the starters for Google+ were ejected with technical penalties for infractions including punching other players, punching the fans, punching the refs… shoot, they were even punching each other. Coach Larry Page was also ejected for creating a hostile, anti-competitive environment.

This game pits two of the major photo sharing websites, Instagram and Flickr, against each other in what some have dubbed the “Bonfire of the Vanities.” The Yahoo-owned Flickr is battling to prove its relevance among younger fans versus a small and amazingly nimble team Instragram.

Breaking News Update: An unprecedented 11-hour team photo shoot was held on Sunday, leaving both teams with a spray on tan hangover that could lead to a fairly low scoring match.

This is a fun idea, and also a good learning tool for the social media options out there. I figure if I don't use something, or haven't even heard of it, then obviously I need to vote for the one I do use or know about. On the other hand, some of the newcomers, with a real interesting twist, i.e., Instagram, make it difficult to decide. Frankly, it's been awhile since I've been on or used Flickr and just experimented recently with Instagram, which is totally a mobile thing, compared to Flickr. Well, I made my hard choice. If you wanna know which one I voted for, ask me. :-)

What a bizarre turn of events in this low scoring matchup! The photo-savvy crowd took picture after picture for their respective team’s websites, resulting in both teams being blinded by the 40,000+ flashes per minute. With their retinas burned, the ball handling skills of both teams plummeted and many of the shots sailed hopelessly into the stands. After three periods of play, the older and slower Flickr finally broke down and was no match for the spritely young Instagram team.
