Loving the Colorado Winter Wonder ...Bread?!?

I guess my prediction for "no snow on new years" from my last SNOW post has been proven wrong. Over the past couple days we have had more snow, here in Colorado Springs. Depending on where you live, snow has fallen anywhere from 7" to a foot, between Thursday and Friday.

Again, we knew it was coming. Only THIS time more people decided to prepare ... But no one knew how difficult it was going to be to "prepare" - as many of the stores did not have regular deliveries because of the last snow storm and the Christmas holiday.

Derek and I went to several stores, in search of "comfort food" to prepare and share with our friends and neighbors. What did we find? Well, we sure did not find BREAD! Have you EVER seen a major grocery store with shelves THIS EMPTY?!? And the bread aisle was not the only vacant place in the store... HUGE sections of canned goods were gone. The meat section only had remnants that there was once USDA Fresh cuts of anything. The produce section was down to a few scraps of Organic cabbage, yams and exotic peppers. What about the dairy section, you ask? Well, I have NEVER paid that much for a gallon of milk ... ever! Pickings were slim ... and this was the same story in most grocery stores around town.

I guess there is a silver lining to every snow-filled cloud, right? Well, since we could not get many groceries, we did not have much trash (or so that should be the case...). This would be a good thing, as the trash collectors have been out of commission for 2 weeks, now - due to non-navigable roads and holiday schedules. Can you IMAGINE how much trash builds up in 2 weeks - especially when you throw Christmas in the mix?!?

The theme of the neighborhood, for the past couple days was "Put the trash out and hope that it magically disappears."  (It finally did disappear, after accumulating for over 16 days ...) Thank you Waste Management for working this weekend!

Today, Saturday Dec.30, we had some great blue skies - a welcome reprieve from the cloudy gloom. Now, it is still chilly out and the wind is still sounding like lost souls floating around my house. But the blue skies are that happy reminder that we live in Colorado- home of 300+ days of sunshine every year!

Ines and Scott- someday I will join you on the beach, in the middle of winter... But until then I will bask in the peaceful chaos that Mother Nature brings us Coloradoans... There IS something nice when you can't run around like a chicken with their head cut off... and you are forced to stay home (and clean a closet...)

TLW- "The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter, It isn't just one of your holiday games; You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES..." (I saw CATS on Broadway when I was 10, and recited this poem to my 7th grade class a few years later. The Vocabulady DOES love T.S.Eliot...)

Scott - you could rub it in a little further with descriptive words like:  clear blue skies and beaming sun rays warming the soft silky sand...........

TLW - that was beautiful ---I love T.S. Eliot.

Mariana - I thought of you and Kristal when I heard about this latest snowstorm in your area......WOW is all I can say about you guys being clobbered like that twice in a week!  We got some snow today, maybe 2 inches, but it was really our first of the season.  I know, nothing like what you've been blessed with that's for sure!

Very nicely done post - love the way you laid out your pictures!  I have seen grocery stores that looked just like what you described, but it was many years ago when we got clobbered with back to back Nor-easters.  We'd been buried with FEET of snow for days on end, and when we could finally bust loose from home, the first place we headed was to the grocery store.......and found the shelves nearly empty.

Stay warm and cozy!!
Happy New Year GF!!

Mariana...We're getting some snow finally!!! I think we have about 2 inches on the ground. If it's still there in the morning I'll take some photos. I don't think they'll half a nice as yours are.

Mariana,

At least you have some gorgeous scenery there to enjoy. Why is it that everyone buys milk and bread? I though only New Englanders did this.

Here's my winter storm recipe.....Package of hot chocolate (preferably Swiss Miss sugar free), Kaluha, Amaretto, drop of cream, milk or half and half, cinamon stick (optional)

Keep these things around as staples.:)

Carole - New Englanders are quite conservative and well-prepared, so our toilet paper supplies are usually well-stocked.  It's the FOOD we have to go out and get, usually right in the middle of a blizzard!  That's about when I decide I'm really hungry for something I don't have on hand, and JUST HAVE TO HAVE IT!!!  We're out on the roads the minute we can be!     ;-)

Mariana - hope you get some sun and loads of food very soon!  I can send some virtual food, but I suspect that just wouldn't do the trick....!!

Happy New Year        Happy New Year!!!

Toilet paper, yikes....Ann is right though, in a blizzard you feel like you are pregnant and you just have to have some weird food product that you wouldn't normally think about:)

our playgroundHi Mariana.. loved the pictures.. I haven't seen snow in years!   That playground is just like the one in our humble, little, blue-collar, working class neighborhood.. see?

Oh btw, this comment.. "Have you EVER seen a major grocery store with shelves THIS EMPTY?!?" .. yes.. 1 or 2 days before the hurricane hits, people just lose their minds. Few have prepared, so bread, water, batteries and everything else in a can or powder goes >poof<.. gone

Your lucky to hide the trash (and freeze it) under the snow. Ahh to be one with nature. Reminds me of fishing in South America and hanging the beer bottle in the river with a net.. ah yess..
those were to days! :)))
