Getting Framed! (a 4 part series)

By

You finally closed on that home you really wanted! Closing costs, moving fees, mortgage payments... how are you going to decorate?

As a creative designer, I have a few tips for inexpensive fun ways to frame and decorate your walls.

This is the first in a 4 part series.

Everyone has magazines! Sports, fashion, children's themes, golf..? Take out that pile and find your favorites; magazine covers are preferred and avoid torn, crinkled, or those with coffee cup rings..

magazines              magazines        stack of mags

Cut them neatly, using a straight edge of steady hands with a pair of scissors. Then measure your image.

Next, head to the store, but avoid spending any money except for the intended purchase. Frames! Look for discounted and low cost frames that will fit your images.

Stores like Marshalls, and TJ Maxx have designer frames with low prices. Target, K-mart, and many others have a large variety and are good if you are looking for several that match. If you can't find the exact size as your magazine image, you can use a matt.

Take time to clean your frame, remove any stickers, and make sure you take note which end the hooks are on before placing your image in. Frame your pictures and hang them (best at eye level) for all to enjoy!

Here are a few I put in the hallway of the kids bedrooms, thus the fun theme "The Land of Nod". Be creative and appropriate (Guns and rifle magazines don't belong in the bedroom and "Playboy" magazines should not be framed for a bathroom which the family and guests use). Enjoy the compliments you will receive!

What? No Playboy photos in the bathroom? I wouldn't want them in the bedroom either...too intimidating. Lol. You are such a clever woman, thanks for sharing your great ideas. Love the Land of Nod photos.

Dorie, I have to be honest I don't buy too many wall hangings....I love to paint and frame my own art.

Kathy, me too we all learn from one another.

Ginny, This Land of Nod series worked best in the hallway to my kids rooms. Tastefully created art, and flowing theme.

Phil, I love that! There is something to be said about the feeling of when you create and hang it yourself.

Jill, I have done pictures from books, things that give meaning to me. And that 1.275 MM listing is my husbands plans for a new construction, we are already getting interest! Yea!

Kristin, you are pretty cleaver yourself, all your tips have me trying new things I never could imagine.

Juli, We all have gifts....whats yours? Do you play an instrument? I already can tell you are good with people.

Debb, Now can you see I'm a Nature girl, using me 3 R's of the environment, reuse, recycle, reduce And with all those reflective mirrors in the bedroom, I have no room for pictures. LOL

Josh, Thank you, have a good weekend too!

AAhahaha.. "Playboy" magazines should not be framed for a bathroom which the family and guests use". I am scared to ask where they do belong! LOL

These are sooo cute. Why should I be surprised, you did them.

Ellen, I've actually done that (framed a favorite or old magazine)...another thing I've done is to frame an old album cover...works great in a music room/den/reckroom.

Clever girl!  I love Nick's idea too about framing album covers.  I also like Sharon's idea about using children's books.

Hi Ellen,

What a GREAT idea for people of ALL ages! The first thing that came to my mind was how much fun a college student would have framing their own pictures. I'm looking forward to the rest of your series.

You lady are TRULY an inspiration!

Shar, there are definitely some things we shouldn't put/ display in the bath, and the same goes here in the Rain. Those secrets we e-mail! LOL

Nick , how about some of those motorcycle shots? I could imagine part of your Harley, cropped and set against a great backdrop? Love to see it!

Donna, The art in books is so inspiring these days, as well as albaum covers, I did movie posters in a movie room.

Janet, Aside from the paintings I do, I find there are so many ways to frame interesting art.

Patricia, Series 4 has to do with my college daughter, I'll post that on Monday, and hopefully back to Whale Tales later next week.

Nick, the same with me, so so few pictures of me exist.

Ellen, in my case it's better for all that I'm behind the camera...you on the other hand belong out in front for all to see ;)
