The Millenials Are Coming! The Millenials Are Coming!

Update*****PLEASE, YOU CANNOT MISS THE ANONYMOUS COMMENT & PRICELESS INPUT ON THIS POST FROM "A FELLOW MILLENIAL"

All eyes were on her,  certainly not me, as we strolled into the upscale suburban supermarket to pick up a bottle of wine for dinner. Who was this exotic blond creature that stood in stark contrast to the rest us wearing denim, sweaters, and tennis shoes?

She looked so URBAN. She seemed so CONFIDENT. She was having SO MUCH FUN.

Completely oblivious to their stares, she was wrapped from head to toe in black. Tightly cinched trenchcoat. Oversized sunglasses. High heeled boots, with a large designer purse slung over her shoulder. Cashmere scarf.

Her nails were perfectly manicured, discreet diamond studs in her ears, from which dangled the white wires of her hidden I-pod.  Almost immediately, she parted ways with me to head straight for the Starbucks cafe within the store.

With a confidence like she had been there a million times before, she perched on a stool. Ordering a coffee that needed 10 words to identify, she began madly texting, and smiling into the little red phone.

When she finally met up with me, she had been to the floral department, because what would dinner be without fresh flowers? She had picked up Soy milk, a pre-packaged organic salad, and a glossy business magazine.

She had come from San Francisco, yet seemed more at home there than me. Why?

I had an ah-ha moment. The talk around the neighborhood had been the recent remodel of this supermarket. For the life of us, we couldn't figure out what they had been thinking when they re-designed "our" store into some sort of "upscale quicky-mart".

Yet here was someone that the store fit like a glove.   My daughter had simply strolled in and found everything she needed in 5 minutes with ease, all the while enjoying the experience.

Yes, some marketing genius had re-invented the store...NOT FOR ME.... for the up and coming generation...and let me tell you, they won't be baking cookies, making casseroles, or cleaning floors.

The Millenials are coming! The Millenials are coming! Are you ready? These are the newly grown up children of baby boomers, born in 1980 and beyond.

Replacing aisles of canned goods was the new Starbucks. A huge floral department replaced all the cleaning supplies. A huge liquor department took up several aisles where there had once been Rice-A Roni.  The produce had gone organic and pre-packaged.  Racks of magazines that would appeal to someone with an MBA were near the Starbucks.  Every possible health food and energy bar replaced the baking aisle. A quarter of the store had been taken up with a large deli, making certain no one had to ever cook a meal from scratch.

And the whole place had become bathed in a kind of soft romantic light, complete with wood plank floors, altering the atmosphere to be much more like a restaurant than a supermarket.

I got it.

They are the first generation to come of age with the internet. They are connected in a way that the world has never seen before. They live for their friends.  They multi task. They do not sacrifice lifestyle for a job. They want to leave the world a better place. They want to experience life.  Soon they will be buying real estate. What does this mean to all of us?

That we should be thinking like the genius that already has the supermarket designed for Millenials.

They're coming.

Interesting.  Very interesting.  I'm going to have to think about this one (being of a generation that also wanted to "leave the world a better place" but in a different way.   Hmmmmm.  Need to talk to my son (35) and daughter (24) about this.

I also find it extremely interesting to watch my children. We wanted to tune out and run away. They want to be connected and urban. We sacrified lifestyle for careers. I don't think they will do this. They don't approve of how hard we worked and want to enjoy life more.

I have two "Millenial" daughters.  Both have traveled all over the world and one lives overseas.  They're sophisticated and they think globally.  They prefer to think of themselves as citizens of the world, not belonging to one little corner of it.  And yes, they're connected!  I'm trying to learn from them..

A fellow Millenial

This is a fellow Millenial here, (19 years old), and yes, we are coming!  If you want some advice on how to "deal with us", I can give you a few tips.

#1-If we are your client, you had better stay connected to us through texting and e-mails.  We don't always want to have a 20 minute conversation over the phone if we can just text back and forth.  We can multi-task better that way.  Another thing that you may not realize is if we contact a friend of ours, they always respond within an hour.  So, if we contact you (voicemail, text, e-mail, ect...) we just automatically expect a response from you within an hour.  That is just the way that we have been brought up.  Sorry!!!

#2-If I were to interview different people for the position of being my Real Estate Broker, the ideal person would be someone that is older (30-55) and more experienced, but is also keeping up with technology.  We really do want the wisdom and experienc of the "older generation" as opposed to someone from our own generation, but technology is so important to us that if you don't have it, we don't want it!

#3-Be honest with us.  We aren't as inexperienced that you may think as we come to buy our first home.  Everything that we ever want to know is available to us on the internet and you can bet the farm that we will have spent hours on the internet researching home buying or selling before we come to you.

Bottom line is- yes, we like our mocha latte's, our I-Pods, our Check Cards, and our upscale shopping centers.  We like CONVENIENCE.  We live for convienience.  If it is not "convienient" for us, you can forget it!  So, make your business as convienient as possible for us!  If you do that, there is no doubt in my mind that we will come to you.  Oh, and one more thing.  Have a KILLER website.  Make it as professional as you can and have as much information on it that you can.  That is a HUGE plus!!!!

Eric: that blond creature I referred to in this post is ending 2007 after being in Africa twice, and Europe (Greece, Turkey, Italy) for 6 weeks. She went to Europe all by herself,,,to travel and meet up with various friends. She traded her hat, purchased at the GAP for a carved Rhino in Africa. She will be in Telluride skiing next week, after attending a wedding in New Orleans, then back to Chicago to finish her MBA.

Sometimes I have a heart attack just thinking about this whole global thing. I might have marched off to work after being brought up by a mom that NEVER worked, but the boldness and worldliness of a kid raised by me out in the suburbs still is amazing.

Sarah: Hi! Nice to hear from you. One thing that is so great about ActiveRain is we can spot trends and adapt to them before the competition. That was the point of the post. My communication skills, which I thought were great, need some modification to keep up with the times.

Did you notice there was a featured post today about Generation Y? Interesting stuff there!

Fabulous post Janet! Being on mom of two young teens, i, too am living the trends but from a parent perspective. There is no doubt that our younger generation is technologically savvy, informed and responsive; my apprehension lies in their ability, as a whole, to earn an income level needed to support our housing prices.  It is still important for our more 'experienced' generation to instill in them that smart (and hard) work will always pay off personally and professionally.

I know what you mean, Kelly. I was writing this post and almost mentioned that, then I thought it might be too regional....I hate the thought that high prices could rob our community of all the brilliant young people. These kids have so much energy and such a great vibe. I always fear that we Boomers will be left in our million dollar ranchers,  while the next generation brings vibrancy and new  life to our urban areas.

That IS what is happening.

Janet, WOW!! I have been trying to get the other agents in my office to WAKE UP! For the most part, they get so aggrevated with me because I use my text messaging and email to communicate REGULARLY. Some say that they are afraid of losing that personal contact, but I say, this is the "personal" contact these kids have grown up with. It is so much different than our time (I just turned 50) and I started in this business in 1997 when cold calling, to some extent, was still a way of desk time. GOD, I'm so glad that time is over!

We have got to stay up with the new technologies or this generation is going to walk right over us. Good grief, just about 12 months ago I had no idea what a blog was and couldn't care less if I ever found out. WRONG!!!! I think it's the best thing since, well......ANYTHING!

I'm going to print out the comment by  the "fellow Millenial" and take it to our office meeting next week.

Hi Janet - they are coming for sure - they're actually already here!  And those priceless comments from that 19 year old should be framed for all of us to pay heed to.  I know I'm going to act on them for my business.  I've only used text messaging a few times, but me thinks I'll be brushing up on that over the holidays.

Kathy: See, you are ahead of the curve...good for you. I agree...I had no idea about blogging either but love how much more I understand the world. I now think most TV is so boring and rarely even read the newspaper.

I thought that comment was just priceless as well. I don't think I have ever had someone write such a remarkable comment...that's why I just had to share it.

I would love to know what your office thinks..hopefully that you are a pretty smart cookie.

Janet - What your fellow Millennial said is very true when a prospective purchaser calls two agents its generally the one that gets back to them first who has a new client or as they used to say "the early bird gets the worm"

Kathy, and it has always been that way...the first guy has a huge advantage. I remember when I was a real estate agent that the trick to getting the listing when they were interviewing several agents was to be the first one to call back.

Janet:

I just read your Post and found it fascinating. The comments of the fellow millennial are brilliant. I am not mentioning my age but I got my young daughter involved in my Real estate business because she is computer savvy, researches everything on the Internet and resolves my computer dilemmas in a minute. Also, she can strike a conversation with anyone at any time. People love her. My youngest 25 year old is a disc jockey; an entrepreneur, uses 4000 free minutes in his cell phone, unlimited text messages and travels to Europe very often; last week to England to hear his favorite band. But I agree, they seem to be free spirits with little worries, nevertheless, the road to fame, in every profession is very difficult. I wish them lots of luck.
