Pedestrian Tales From The Middle of the Road, #20

I've hit better milestones, I can assure you.  But today's story is my 20th one about a needless or careless pedestrian fatality here in our Central Florida area.  We can surely do better, folks...a better job of following the traffic laws ourselves, and a better job of teaching our children how to do so.

And law enforcement can surely do a better job of enforcing our pedestrian laws.  Does anyone really enjoy driving down the road at 40-50 mph and having someone just stroll out in front of them?  I hope not.

This tragic milestone falls under the watch and responsibility of Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson.

Man struck and killed by truck while walking along S.R. 40

A pedestrian was killed after he walked into the path of a semi-tractor trailer Friday night along a state road in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Robert Colflesh, 42, of Astor was pronounced dead at the scene near State Road 40 at the point where it crosses the St. Johns River, officials said.

Investigators said the truck driver, Alfredo Zertuche, 68, of Wisconsin hit his brakes but couldn't stop the vehicle from striking Colflesh in the westbound lanes of S.R. 40 at about 9:41 p.m.

FHP's Sgt. Kim Montes said troopers do not know why Colflesh walked in front of the truck. The crash is still under investigation.

Why Mr. Colflesh walked in front of a semi?  We'll never know.  But what happens when human meets semi in the middle of the road is an easy puzzle to solve.

May God bless Mr. Colflesh's family- and may God also provide comfort and counsel to Mr. Zertuche in the coming days.

I hear you how utterly stupid. I see this all the time out here dumb-sses literally think they own the road and are invincible because they are in a cross walk??? Sure they may have right of way but not looking is a sure fire way to step in front of the car that can't stop in time and likely will be your last step. What an idiot

State Road 40 at Astor, where it crosses the St. John's River.

I know that place well.  It is so pretty, after you drive out of the Ocala Forest heading toward the East.

   What a sad story...

Hi, David:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  Crosswalks?  What the heck are those?  Kidding, of course- but that's really 1/2 the point of this series.  None of the folks killed in my posts' stories were in the crosswalks.  Motorists are correctly held at fault when one crossing lawfully in a crosswalk is mowed down;  motorists only share fault- and an increasingly lesser degree so- when these headphone-wearing, cell-phone-talkin', stroller-pushin' folks leave the safety of the curb and saunter out towards the grim reaper's outstretched arms.

Hi, Fred:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  I don't yet know that area well, but I've come to know a good bit of Volusia County recently- and it is surely pretty.  It makes it all the more irritating when the view from our roadways gets more and more obstructed by those little wooden crosses...#21 on the way.

Since none of you actually live or have lived in Astor let me give you a little insight. The scene: Not really a cross walk scenario there. Also anyone who is blazing any faster than 40 mph should know better . Especially a truck driver. Not condoning not choosing the right time to cross but this sounds like a 2 person error. There is really no safe way from one side to the other. A sharper curve lies on one side and there is a somewhat blind drive there as well. The person : I know the man who was hit. Always seemed happy. Very hard worker. Not the suicidal type. Not sure of his state of mind when this event occurred . Not implying anything in general anyways. I worked with this guy 10 years ago and my siblings were classmates. His family misses him. Please be weary of the comments you leave here about him and your own assumptions. None of us were there that night and this is not some bustling area of a metropolis where crossing the road has its own designated and marked areas. Afterthoughts of the comments: Please think of the families before posting snide 1 liners and negative opinions. It is a free country where you can speak your mind but there is always an equal or greater reaction that may be inadvertent.
