Where do I purchase a license to be a writer? Or a journalist?

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Where do I purchase a license to be a writer? Or a journalist?I was asked once; “Have you ever written anything?”  When I responded that I wrote a daily real estate blog post the questioner continued:

“Have you ever REALLY written anything?”

Call me simple-minded, but I always assumed that a writer was someone that writes. I never realized that there were professional qualifications or designations required before one could proudly declare that they meet the standard for “writer!”

And the same goes for being a journalist. What is the benchmark for qualifying as a journalist? Who is in charge and where do I apply.

Do I need a license? Is there a professional board? Do I get letters behind my name?

Do I consider myself to be a writer?

You bet I do!

Do I consider myself to be a good writer?

That’s up to the reader to decide!

We just write, and since it HAS brought us business, I'd guess you can say we're professional writers :)  And I have used the Press/Media sections of various local websites for local pictures/info to enhance our local posts.

From what I see on the TV news shows that are crowded with professional Journalists and writers a good percentage of them can't write or construct stories that are grammatically correct and they can't spell very well either.  So I think you are doing a much better job.

Profit from my two decades of experience

Richard, When I was in graduate school I wrote over 300 papers, yet I consider myself more of a writer today. I just try to have fun and enjoy what I do and make some money.  LOL.

Good Writer???  I put you above myself.

For some people being a writer you need to have something published.  WEll, I think that is happening here and we occasionally get paid for doing it also.

Good question, if it will require a license (which after the government sees your post I am sure it will) then are we acting illegal LMBO in Pensacola

I had the same thought as Charles (#6) that just might give someone an idea of another revenue generating scheme.

Hi Richard - we're in a period of transition in communications, and the old guard feels threatened by the new. And, as in real estate or pretty much anything else, the range of quality in journalism or writing is very wide. There are bloggers, as well as print journalists and authors, whose ability to use words is something I deeply envy, and there are pathetic hackers everywhere also. I've been sneered at as a blogger, but in very few years, the only way anyone will be published is on-line, and the trees will be allowed to go on being trees.

How much content have we generated? A lot, I would say. That makes us writers! THX.

J & R...

For some reason I always get the impression that TV news reporters didn't do very well in school! Thanks.

They DO get the final say. Thanks.

Oh, we're supposed to make money? ;) and thanks.

I tend to concur with that line of reasoning. Thanks.

Writing helps you and me list and sell more real estate.

I consider you a writer! But does that really matter?

Hi Richard,

I love to write, I took classes in college, no license...( I agree with Lisa- don't give them any ideas) It's a personal thing, people can choose to read your work, or not.  I personally enjoy reading your writing.  I think you are very talented and have an artsy side to you. Am I right?
