Home Staging Tips - How to Hang Art 'Over an Object'

This is Part 2 of ‘home staging tips for hanging art over an object’. After hanging 1000s of pieces of art, photos, sculptures, baskets, fabric wall hangings, swordfish (yes swordfish, several of them) I’d like to share some of my ‘hanging art’ guidelines. These are guidelines so there will be variations on the theme, but these work pretty well in any home or office.

A few years ago I wrote an ebook ‘Trade Secrets of Hanging Art Like a PRO!‘ and I just recently produced two You Tube videos to demonstrate my process.

Here are my quick tips for hanging art over an object like a fireplace…

Art over an object

1) HANGING ART OVER AN OBJECT
- perfection is to find a piece of art 2/3 the length of the object you are hanging it above
- find center of your wall – mark with pencil or sticky tack
- find the center of your art – mark it with sticky tack
- measure 4 – 10″ above the object you are placing the art
- line up the centers – put a pencil mark at center at the top of the piece of art
- measure the wire from the top to the bottom
- take that measurement and measure down from the top/center of where you are hanging your art and mark it on the wall with a pencil (like an inverted T)
- the intersecting point is where you put the bottom of your hanger
- nail in your hanger and use a level to make sure it is even

It takes a lot of practice to make it perfect but these guidelines should help a bit! Next post will be ‘floating or gallery wall art’ tips…

Adding additonal lighting hear the fireplace makes it stand out more in this picture.

What a great series...I'm sure very helpful for so many people who have no idea how to hang art.

Hi Dana--I am going to encourage every one on Maui to view your YouTube video.  Art here is hung helter-skelter and it always drives me crazy.  I don't think people understand that they are "rules" that govern hanging and placement.

Love these tips, Dana. For most of the consultations I do for occupied home owners, this poses a real challenge. In my experience, it's usally hung too high. Great tips!

Harry - yes having accent lighting can really showcase a piece of art!

Sharon- yes  indeed - that's what inspired me to write my ebook - because it is a real 'art' to hanging art!

Janet- drives me crazy to Janet!

Kathy - I always wondered 'whose eye height' are some home owners using. I've had to stretch my neck to see art where people have high cathedral ceilings!

I agree - almost everyone hangs art too high.  Thanks for the specific directions!

Great tips I only wish more homeowners knew these things, I have seen art hung way too high and with huge screws which just makes patching so much more difficult.

So very true Wendy. When I pull out a 2" spike for a really small piece of art I can only ask myself "What were they thinking....?" And you are right it can take out a lot of the drywall when it comes out too.
