RE segment on the Today show this morning- thanks a lot!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Leslie Prest, Prest Realty, Sales and Rentals in Payson, AZ

Did anybody else watch the Today show this morning? They started introducing a segment coming up as "your agent's told you all wrong!" and "don't listen to your agent" sorts of comments. When the segment was on it was a representative from Redfin who basically said "price it right and make sure your agent is web saavy". He even stated that he isn't a salesman- so why was he on as their expert?

Is it just me? Yes, what he said made sense. It's exactly what I tell my clients! So how does this equate to "your agent is all wrong"? And since it DOESN'T, why did they bill it that way? Why are we the whipping boys here?

 smart REALTOR sign

A better way to put it would have been "HIRE A SMART REALTOR"!

Because a smart REALTOR is going to tell their clients to price it right, is going to show them up to date comps, including ones that didn't go thru MLS, they are going to discuss marketing, they are going to get it out on the net. The only thing I DIDN'T agree with him was when he said put your listing up on Friday. It depends on who you are trying to reach- for the general public on the net, yes, for agents on MLS, no.

"journalism" such as this fries my cheese, but unfortunately, noone will give us a forum to tell it like it is.

Except Active Rain, of course.

Not listening to the agent is precisely what dooms many sellers to failure in the first place.

There is a lot of mis-information out there.  Unfortunatly, a few bad agents give all of us a bad name.

Boy, I wish I'd seen it. Now that I'm in customer service instead of sales, I have contact with many more Realtors on a daily basis, and I am always impressed by how hard working and professional most of them are. As for that small percentage that is not, the damage they do to our reputation is immense. Please, please, when you discover a fellow agent breaking the rules, TURN THEM IN. It helps us all.

It would be nice if media would report on more positive things. Consumer's need to be more vocal in what they want to see and hear. Thanks for the report.

And, if they are going to complain on the air about dishonest agents, do we get to air a segment on dishonest sellers or buyers? "No, the roof doesn't leak, we just painted the ceiling to brighten it up,"  "oh- that smell is coming from the neighbor's lagoon, our septic works just fine." How many agents have foundthemselves in hot water because we listened to what sellers told us about their property?  And how many of us have ever lost sales because we trusted the buyer at their word?

The media can slant things however they want, and in many cases there are legitimate reasons or situations that warrant it. I do believe only naive, gullible people actully trust what they see on TV anymore, so maybe there is hope for us. If not, we can all start selling used cars. now THERE is an industry the public really likes!

Amy- they weren't actually negative about selling- just about RE Agents.

Amber- I agree that we shouldn't be gullible. I'm nice to people but I check out what they tell me.

I really feel that we can blame the media for at least a portion of the downturn in our market right now. Interest rates are good, and it is truly a buyer's market. You'd think we would be really busy SELLING homes, but the public is afraid to do anything right now. The offers that I have been getting recently are almost always really low. There will be repeated counter offers, and many times they never make it to contract. Many of them are buying for investment and really don't want to pay anything like market value for the property. We all like a good deal, but we all like to make a $ too!

The national media is clueless when it comes to what is happening in local markets.  They should put that disclaimer up before they run any story, that would be responsible journalism.  As it is, we've got people here in KY who think the sky is falling when we're in just about the same market as we were 5 years ago.  Yes, we aren't experiencing appreciation, but neither has the market gone down by 30%.

I have to agree with Greg completely - The national media is clueless.

Leslie, Sometimes you have to wonder where in the world do they get their so called "Experts". The media and all of their idiotic expert advise, wether it be on T.V. or online has most of the general population so timid about doing anything. There are people out there that want to buy but are scared now and Sellers that are even too scared to have their home listed by a Realtor that they try for 6 months to try and sell it on their own with just a yard sign.

Not only are they CLUELESS- they just keep repeating the same things. I heard again (0n a Phoenix news show) a promo for a segment "what you real estate agent isn't telling you". I tell my clients everything I think will help. Any good agent does!

The media is looking for someone to blame for the mortgage meltdown and subprime mess and we're it- this tells the consumer that it wasn't their fault- and also leads to more litigation. I'm sorry that I didn't see the segment, it would have made me angry.

First off the main stream media tends to be lopsided and it appears the Today Show was just trying to sell their headlines to inhance viewership. Secondly Redfin has been trying to reinvent the real estate industry for several years.  They have a few good ideas and some really bad ones.

Thinking outside the box

Leslie, I often see these "Hit" pieces on television and I to get so annoyed. They are presented to stir up the public and devalue the Agents. Many times written articles or TV segments have non real estate professionals presenting this stuff and to me borders on given real estate advice with out a License. It really burns my tail!! I guess it the world we live in.

The media is no fan of Realtors...at least in my opinion.

Personally, I prefer a Thursday listing so that Realtors have time to set up their weekend showings, but I still minimize the Days on Market.

For starters real estate agents, brokers are the biggest offenders in the public perception. But the media takes more complicated stories, looks for a clever sound bite in the quick production of fast moving new stories to cover. And proceeds to make a comic book out of it. Misinformation, it happens so turn up your blogging channel transmitter volume, wattage and take that approach, add all that is wrong, deceptive, or just plain missing.
