NAR'S GRADUATE REALTOR INSTITUTE - the designation

This week, I completed my first of the nine classes necessary for NAR's GRI designation. We're given up to five years to fulfill the requirements and it's one of the few designations that has no annual fee. The first class consisted of two full days (8:30 - 5:30) and a small multiple choice test at the end. The days were long but the content was interesting.

As a real estate agent, I'm used to flexibility as part of my workday and it's been a while since I've had to sit for that many hours straight. No problem. I always enjoyed attending school before and I'm sure I can get used to it once again.

Actually, in an attempt to elevate our jobs to a profession, I'm a fan of making additional education a requirement. In the future, I hope real estate will garner more respect.

I know exactly what you mean. We'll have 2 in college. My oldest already finished. NAR actually gives out scholarships not necessarily based on income.

Hi Jill: It is the first leg of the three but it is well worth it. Give yourself a pat on the back. Congrats.

Cindy, I know you have yours and I think it's great. Education standards are not only good for ourselves but a first step in having the industry recognized as something more than what you get into if you want to make a quick buck. Because as everyone who's lasted through the depression recession knows, it's anything but quick and sometimes, it's not even a buck.

Maria - Help me out here. There are two more legs?

In Minnesota, Realtors are required to get 15 hours of education a year.  I think that that makes most of them better.....

Ron, In New York, it's 22 1/2 hours of CE every 2 years. It acts as a refresher for things we already know and keeps us abreast of all new developments. Designations are optional but a few key ones can be helpful in the industry.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Jill, you picked a good way to broaden your knowledge and skills.  One attribute of the GRI is that it is one of the few designations that does not require you to annually send money to NAR for the right to continue having it.
