Gardening Ingenuity in the City – A Vertical Earth Garden Makes the Most out of Limited Urban Space in Encinitas

Vertical Earth Garden at Solace and the Moonlight LOung in Encnitas CA

Clever bit of sculpture, isn’t it?

I was out touring some lofts in Encinitas recently, and taking photos of the Arts Alive Banner Project when I spied this vertical earth garden outside a new restaurant at Pacific Station in downtown Encinitas – Solace and the Moonlight Lounge.

Vertical Earth Gardens (VEG) presents a clever, space-saving way in the “city” to grow a garden for this restaurant’s everyday use, something that many people could affordably take advantage of in those spaces where a traditional vegetable or herb garden won’t work – balconies, patios and perhaps even on the wall.

Jeff - Very cool urban patio garden!  I bookmarked the vertical earth gardens link you provided.

I've seen some ingenious rooftop and patio gardens at downtown Minneapolis lofts and condos. This shows what a homeowner can do with a little ambition and hard work!

This is the most creative gardening ever. Looks like a wonderful way to go green with limited space. Margaret

WOW! ooooEEE! This is really, really interesting! Will yo please post it on over to the ECO-ALL-STARS Group, too? It sort of looks more horizontal than vertical to me...but I guess it climbs up the exterior of the building?

I've never seen anything like this either but it is so clever! Makes total sense when you don't have space for a garden for spices!

Hi Jeff, This is pretty cool. I have never seen one of these before but I can sure see how they could become a standard feature as urban gardens.

Kristin - I bet something similar could be fashioned. Good luck

Eric - it's always interesting to see what ingenuity leads to, especially when space is limited.

Margaret - I was pretty impresssed when I saw it, especailly given how it is being used by the restaurant.

Nancy - I have several clients I am going to introduce this to as well. They will love it.

JaneAnne - I should have posted it there without being asked. I normally do! I think they have a number of models depending on the space.

George - I remember seeing one someplace quite some time ago but seeing it the other day was perfect - I thought others would enjoy reading about it.

LaNita - agreed. I can see condo owners and those living in teh city being able to enjoy their gardening.

William - I have seen several now frmo a distance and from reading their site it sounds like they are getting pretty popular.

Jane - so keep us posted on your venture. Basil? Rosemary? Lettuce?

Jeff
