Carlsbad Village by the Sea – A Community Profile and Tour
What an appropriate name for a charming seaside town about 35 miles north of San Diego and 2 hours south of Los Angeles in Southern California.
The California desert cities are a little over 2 hours away to the east and mountains for skiing not much farther.
Carlsbad is far from being a quiet coastal community, despite the relaxed atmosphere that is readily apparent. Indeed, visitors, and residents, are often surprised at how much there really is to do and see in this town of more than 100,000. Let’s take a quick overview tour.
HOUSING
Carlsbad real estate covers a broad spectrum of styles, sizes and ages, in a number of neighborhoods that will appeal to a broad range of needs. Aviara, La Costa (formerly a city of its own but annexed by Carlsbad), and Olde Carlsbad are probably the best known major areas of Carlsbad.
Whether you desire an apartment, new construction, a gated community of luxury homes, homes in one of the master planned communities (e.g., Bressi Ranch, La Costa Greens, La Costa Valley, Calavera Hills, The Foothills at Carlsbad, La Costa Ridge, Rancho Carrillo), waterfront homes just steps to the beaches, retirement house, assisted living, or resort-style condos, Carlsbad probably offers what you are seeking, in a climate most of us refer to as "paradise."

DINING & RESTAURANTS
As a self-professed foodie and chocoholic, I can tell you Carlsbad offers a wide range of dining options to suit most taste buds and budgets.
Places with views, character, charm, or just plain good eating and ambiance…Carlsbad has them, from very casual to high end. For a reference list of some of the places I like, simply visit my restaurants list (just be aware that I write about places I have dined at elsewhere – it’s not just Carlsbad!).
Dini’s by the Sea (great for brunch with views), Bluewater Grill, 264 Fresco, Campfire, Park 101 and Jeune et Jolie are just a few places to check out in the Village area.
The Park Hyatt Resort in Aviara offers some of the best high end dining in North County at Vivace. There is also dining at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.
And don’t miss the opportunity to dine al fresco at the beach watching the sunset…talk about views!! And for chocolate lovers – you must visit the Carlsbad Chocolate Bar in the heart of Carlsbad Village, at the corner of State Street and Carlsbad Village Drive
THINGS TO DO
Whether you prefer shopping, the arts (theater, music, art galleries, museums, outdoor fairs and festivals), or outdoor activities (golf, bike riding, skate boarding, walking, tennis, swimming) you will not be at a loss of things to do.
The Flower Fields, Legoland, the Museum of Making Music, and multiple outdoor art fairs and festivals are very popular with residents and visitors.
The Carlsbad Village Faire, held twice a year, is the largest 1-day outdoor fair in the country. In the summer we have 9 FREE TGIF Concerts in the Parks on consecutive Friday nights that are tremendously popular. Need I say more?
BEACHES
Carlsbad is known for its beaches, with about 7 miles of sandy coastline for you to enjoy.
Whether you are a beach lover, or simply like being near the coast, you can enjoy the Carlsbad beach life year-round - walking, sunning, collecting shells (they are pretty limited) and stones, chilling out, eating dinner on the beach while the sun sets, surfing, kite flying, and more.
Parking is free in most areas although you will find pay lots at the state beaches. Some beaches are near street level while others will require you to navigate some steps.
SCHOOLS
Carlsbad boundaries overlay 3 different school districts, so depending on where you live children will attend the Carlsbad Unified Schools, the San Marcos Schools, or the Encinitas Union and San Dieguito Union High School Districts. Do not assume your child will go to a particular school before you buy a home but be sure to verify with the school district.
