See The USA

Real Estate Broker/Owner with MoonDancer Realty, Dillsboro,NC NC# 218097

If my father had been with me last week and we passed this scene, he would've been able to tell me the make, model and year of this car residing outside of a farm in Franklin, NC. He probably could also have told me a true story to go along with it. There was hardly ever a vehicle of any kind that he couldn’t identify.

Make no mistake, I didn’t inherit a car-identifying gene from Dad but I’m fairly certain this is a Chevrolet and I’m willing to bet it was born about the same time I was! I hope it is a Chevrolet otherwise calling this post “See The USA” doesn’t make quite as much sense…as it is, I guess if you are younger than 30 it maybe doesn’t make any sense anyway.

The scene served its purpose, Dad’s memory visits me at the most surprising times.

p.s. I WAS born AFTER this

Mona - this is a clever post and reminds me of my Dad.  I miss all the information and stories he could tell.  BTW - I also "got" your title!  :)

Mona, I can't identify cars either AND I also remember the See the USA theme. I love the beautiful photo! It could have been taken back in the day! Thanks

Hi Mona,

Nothing like putting the car in the back of the property.

I guess they don't have to worry about it being in the way.

I have memories of my father a lot. I recall his famous quotes all the time.

Now he's waiting just beyond the moon.

Best, Clint McKie

ps, about the song. I was too.

May be a Belair!

We saw the USA in our Chevrolet when Mom bought a 1962 white Impala with red interior.  My Dad had been sick for a long period of time and passed away.  Mom decided to load her three children into the brand spanking new car and see this great country!  We have so many wonderful memories I could write a book about it.

Themes in advertising are also memorable." Pepsi Generation" "Because I'm Worth It" comes to mind as well as "Do It"

Yesterday my Mom celebrated her 84th birthday and we cherish all the memories from the past and the ones we create daily.  Thanks for sharing Mona

Barbara, thanks and I'm glad we both got to think about our fathers this morning.

Leslie, that's what I thought although I doubt back in the day any self respecting car owner would ever have let it get this rusty, lol.

Clint, I like the thought of waiting just beyond the moon.  I also thought for sure you'd i.d. this car for me!

Eileen, what a great story...I loved it and think you should post it to your blog.  So heartwarming.

Linda, you are more than welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Oh Mona, what a nostalgic day. I remember the commercial like it was yesterday and my Dad would have been able to identify the car too. He is gone 31 years and like you, he is thought of often and at the strangest provocations.

Mona, that's a tough one at this distance but I don't think it's a Chevy due to the hood length.  Looks more like a Ford but which one I don't know, yet.  I will guess 1953, 1954 or 1955 though.  I think I heard Dinah singing that tune while I was still in the womb.  Loved it, and the memories.

Mona,  I don't know what kind of car it is, but this is a great post.  Your photo looks like a postcard.  Your story was wonderful as was the commercial! (I was born after it too!)

Great photo - and I guess that commercial had a whole lot of impact since as soon as I read your title I was mentally singing "in your Chevrolet....". Ahhhhhh nostalgia.

Sadly, I remember Dinah well.  She was the all American girl and I loved her variety show,  She always finished by throwing that kiss.  A real pure voice. Such a simple time.

Sheila, my Dad will have been gone only one year in June...I'm so glad his memory surprises me.

Kevin, I might have heard my parents humming the song...can't actually say I remember her singing it.  You are in a beautiful area of Florida.  I used to come over there from Miami when I wanted more of a "country" feel.  Guess those days are gone, lol.

Elyse, thanks for the kind words.  Maybe a postcard for visiting Franklin! I miss postcards.

Nancy, wouldn't it be interesting to find out how long its been since the ad aired. That's powerful marketing.

Leslie, what ever happened to variety shows anyway?  Guess they've been gobbled up by so-called reality shows.
