Temecula Police Set Up Sobriety Checkpoints

An article in the Californian newspaper, on March 21, 2011 announced that Temecula Police would be conducting a sobriety checkpoint at locations in Temecula.  *The police must publicly announce that they are conducting a sobriety checkpoint and this article gave only vague locations stating one was within the Temecula city limits and the other was in an "unincorporated", part of Riverside County "near", Temecula.

This is what the article in the Californian newspaper said:   "The checkpoint will be set up from 8 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday in areas that have the greatest opportunity for deterring drunken and drugged driving, police officials said."

However, this information was incorrect as while I was driving up Rancho California Road toward the wineries, on Saturday, I did see the roadblock set up at approximately 2:00 p.m.   I was not stopped as I was traveling in the opposite direction, but I did see a line of cars at least a couple of miles long as the police were stopping every car coming from the wineries.

*"According to California law regarding sobriety checkpoints, police conducting a lawful sobriety checkpoint must give advance notice of the roadblock and sobriety checkpoint to the public.

If you are planning a trip to the Temecula Wine Country and are also planning on tasting wine at any of the Temecula Wineries, make sure you have a designated driver along who can drive without being under the influence of alcohol.

Wow that seems pretty big, but they also need to get their story straight about when and where since that is what they are expected to do in these situations.

Hey Jane -

Albuquerque has sobriety checkpoints on a constant basis and the kicker is the news tells exactly where and when.  It makes me wonder why tell?  The drinking drivers just know to take an alternative route. Right?  I know back in my drinking days (many moons ago) I would have just taken the long way home.

Still believe that we continue to give up or have taken from us our constitutional rights all in the name of some vague war on .....fill in the blanks.  We are supposed to be the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.  We are neither. Traffic is held up, innocent people are inconvenienced or worse and what ever happened to "probable cause".

Jane,  I am all for keeping drunk drivers off the road. I would not be a happy camper if I were delayed by a sobriety check point I could have avoided if I knew about it. At the end of the day, I'd rather be delayed and not happy about it if it saves a life.  What the police did and how they did it does not appear to be in accordance with the legal requirements.

Honestly I have no problem with it, especially when I've heard the condition of some of those people are leaving the wineries. (They certainly shouldn't be on the road!)

Jane, I saw the one on Saturday and yes traffic was backed up. Those of us that live locally

have all heard the stories about the drunks in Wine Country. Keeping them off the road is

priority one, and inconvenience is a small price to pay.

Jane - I'm all for sobriety checkpoints and I can only imagine how long the lines are especially at 2:00 in the afternoon, but it's well worth it.
