Do Your Best!
My seven year old signed up to be a cub scout a few months ago. We were all a little concerned that it would interfere with Soccer, Tennis and all of Tanner's other activities. My husband and I knew nothing about the Scouts, and we had no idea just what to expect.
Now, we are totally into the Scouts and lovin' it! We have attended our first Scout Family Campout (It was a blast), we have helped picked up trash on the beach for our community service project, we have carried the flags during the procession at church, we hike, and we visit local businesses to learn about boat building, television production, etc. But before all of the fun started, One of the first challenges the new scouts must complete is learning the scout motto, "Do your best". A lesson that seems simple enough, but we all need to be reminded of every now and then.
A couple of weeks ago, Tanner participated in his first Pinewood Derby. With the help of his dad, they sanded and shaped the car. Once it was ready, they spray painted it silver. It was my responsibility to help decorate the car, so I taped off the stripes and Tanner eagerly painted them metallic Red. Tanner then added a few stickers for decoration, and we were done..... except that the car still didn't have a name and it was underweight. We tried BBs, but they just weren't heavy enough. We tried many different things, and they were all too heavy. I remembered a half dollar in Tanner's room, and adding that to the car would add almost enough weight to make it the perfect 5 oz.
We attached the half dollar, giving us the name for our car, "50 Cent" (yes, Tan Man is a rap fan), and couldn't wait to see how she'd do at the derby. On the drive to the event, we were excited and talking about the race, and how much fun we all had creating our car. Tanner said, "I just hope my car doesn't come in last place".
Well, no worries..... we were all happy & surprised that "50 cent" came in 1st Place in Tanner's division. The car performed at a whopping 201.5 mph! Being 1st place put him in the finals, where he and "50 cent" didn't place, but still performed well. He was thrilled about his new Trophy and the success he experienced. The important thing was that he did his best! We all did. In fact, each boy that participated in the derby received a blue ribbon that read, "I did my Best".
Often times in life, I forget that valuable and simple rule, "Do Your Best".
Today, I will remember to do my best.... and it will be a wonderful day! If I don't get that listing.... It's okay, I know I did my best. If that offer is rejected... It's okay, I know I did my best.
Wishing all of you a wonderful day filled with "best" moments!
