How I Get Rid of Spam Callers...

By
Real Estate Agent with New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County

I work out of my "home office"... almost all the time.  I don't know if it's just me.. but when I get a "spam phone call" at home... I get a little resentful of having my privacy invaded.

Sooo... let me share with you how I have handled the last few home spam calls.  It's a method that seems to have worked... so you may want to borrow it... or not.

                    Spam Caller:  Ring Ring...

Me:  <in a very old, crotchety, gently mind-numbing voice... I answer and say>  Hello ?

Spam Caller:  Yes... Mrs Stone... I'm calling from Blah Blah Airlines.  You have just won a free trip to...

Me:  <using the same voice>  Barbara... Barbara... is that you ?

Spam Caller:  No, Ma'am... it's not Barbara... I'm calling from...

Me:  <Before she finishes, I say>  Barbara... is my prescription ready ?

Spam Caller:  Ma'am... I'm not calling about a prescription.  You've won a free trip to...

Me:  Is this the lady from the pharmacy ?  Is my prescription ready ?

Spam Caller:  Ma'am... you have a nice day, now... bye bye...

And that's it.  The Spam Caller disappears !

It is very rare that the same person ever calls me again.  And if they do... they get the same elderly craggily voice asking if it's Barbara with my prescription.

It appears to work on just about everybody.  Free trips, health club memberships, dating services, whatever...

I don't know if you are silly enough to do something like this... but if you are... you just might drastically cut down on the Spam Calls you receive.. and give you some silly fun while doing it.  <impish grin>

Very creative and much better than what I use to say.  I would tell them that I would love whatever they wanted to sell me and was it ok that I have been unemployed for four years.  They hang up on me.

Ms Karen- had to come back to you on this one.  Years ago I kept getting obscene calls on my home phone.  So, I transferred my number that night to the police station.  Calls stopped.

Hi Karen,

I am too polite to try this.

But, I just reach over and hang up.

I generally just put them on the speaker phone and ignore them. After a while they hang up. Then I hit redial repeatedly while I work...may as well tie up their phone lines!

Great story, Karen!  It reminds me of one of the funniest audios I've ever heard on YouTube called a Telemarkerter's Nightmare.  It has to do with a crime scene.  Worth looking for!

Karen:

You are genius!  What a great idea.  I usually listen for a minute and then tell them I am not interested and hand up while they are still talking.  Your idea is much better.

Hilarious approach, but the big question that I have is, how do you know when it is a spammer and when it is a client or other business?  Do you have a special caller id that says spammer?, prospective client? etc?

Bob:  Your question of how do I know if it is a Spammer or a Client us a great question.

Well, I am talking about my HOME number. here.  My clients only get my cell phone number... so anyone calling my home is either a Spam Caller, or someone I know.   So... if it is someone I know... they would totally understand my crotchety voice asking them if it is Barbara... :)

Man, I've been missing all of the great featured posts lately.  I need to pay a little bit better attention.  If I were a spam caller I'd probably be cracking up at calls I made that had these reactions.  -Kasey

I do not know how I missed this super fire sure way to stop spam callers. One method I use is to say "just a minute" and walk away from the phone. Usually in 30 seconds they hang up!

Emily... come on, now.  How much fun is that?  There are some days when I just really need to irritate "somebody"... and Spam Callers make excellent targets... LOL.  Especially when they aren't expecting anyone to "give it back" to them.

Karen Anne, this is great and it takes some creativity and acting to pull it off convincingly as you apparantly DO!

What I object to most is for the real estate telemarketer to call the office and pose as a potential client interested in a property and the front desk at the office forwards the call to our cell phones!    BW
