Safety tip for Real estate agents. Do not leave your garage door opener in your car

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Centre Realtors

Do not leave your garage door opener in your car.

I just read about someone who left the opener and gps in the car .

They were at a game. Someone broke in to the car and knew where they lived from the gps information. They had enough time to go and break into the house using the opener. They burglarized the house and took off.

I read this in an email that I received alerting everyone so I thought of sharing this on AR.

Some of us have a gps and remote in the car while showing houses.

Do not have your home address in the gps and do not leave anything that has your home address in the car.

I had read recently about someone stealing  the keys  that were left in the car and knowing where the person lived  because of registration in glove compartment and doing the same thing.

Gita: This is an excellent tip...we cannot be too careful and the garage door opener is an easy thing to overlook.

Sad that everyone has to be alert in this manner - but it is how it is.

Another tip I've read is that if you sometimes need to use your GPS to bring you home from anywhere, enter the address of a commercial business near home rather than your home address.

Gita, my grandson reset my GPS after finding out I programmed my home into it.  It does make sense not to let everyone know the details of your life.

Thanks for looking out for us. There is a matter of practicality. I need to use the garage door opener as I always use my garage. However, I don't leave files or personal information in the car, not even an insurance card. I have a Droid so I don't have a GPS in the car.

Hi Gita.  People program their GPS with the home designation.  Not a good idea.

Kay, I have to reset my gps .

Cathy, I guess it is ok if you do not have anything with your address in the car.

Conrad, I agree.

Good advice, Gita.  However, many have their auto registration, insurance cards and other information that includes the home address.  More good reasons to have a detached garage.
