When is it a habit and when is it a rut??

There have been some blogs about habits and forming new habits latlely. I was wondering the difference of a habit and being in a rut? Thinking over the last several years I see patterns that I change for awhile and then moved on to something else.

When I first moved here over a dozen years ago, I found a group of local guys that drank coffee every morning at 5 a.m. at a certain coffee shop table. I soon fit in telling whoppers and seeing who could tell a bigger one. It was fun and a also a way to keep an ear to the ground. After a few years I was bored and now only show uo monthly to keep in touch.

I switched to going to the gym at 5 a.m. and met a different group there. That lasted for a few years, now its a different time with a different group. I could keep rambling on about different times and places in my life.

So back to the question, when is it a habit and when is it a rut?

Rob, the habit is waxing your beautiful 1960 Corvette every month and the rut would be when you're finally too scared to take it out for a spin because it's perfect.

Kevin:Being that I am a former auto painter, I am too burned out to spend time waxing it. I do take it out frequently, it is my icon here because it is how everyone in this town knows me!

Life is all habits and ruts!  It's human nature and it's what every one of us does all through life.

Good morning Rob. Very good question. I guess I never thought about it, but I agree with Jeanne and Ralph. Life is about habits and ruts,

To me, when something is no longer enjoyable, I put it in the "rut" category and move on.

A habit can be good or bad. Good habits can keep us healthy, alive, and smart. Bad habits can have the adverse effect. Ruts, I think fall into the same category as insanity; doing the same thing over and over hoping for a different result. - (I like your new Rhody bit you have on your website ;-)

I think it has a lot to do with how it is affecting your life. If you are doing it and it makes your life better, than that is a good habit. If it is something you do daily and it starts to affect everything else you do and your friends and family, then that is a rut.

Hi Rob, I'm with the others, it's a habit when it's enjoyble...but like anything, if it stays stagnant and is the same ole..and no one in the group wants to stimulate a bit of change..then it's a rut.

It's a Rut when it deprives you of experiencing other things, other places, and other people.

For example, having coffee at the same place every day.   You might be missing out on other, possibly better coffee shops or restaurants, and the opportunity to meet new people.
