Fairhope
The quaint community of Fairhope is nestled along Mobile Bay on the Eastern Shore of Baldwin County. Although Fairhope is known for its scenery and gorgeous flowers that the city changes regularly with each season, it also has roots grounded equally deep in the arts as well as the writer’s community. With South Alabama’s moderate climate, this picturesque town is a haven for athletes as one can swim, bike, run, and sail throughout the year. Take a trip to South Mobile Street to watch one of the best sunsets this country has to offer...all jokes aside, it’s better than Key West; and you will see residents young as well as young at heart fishing, walking, biking or taking their last sail through the sunset for the day. Live Oak trees throughout the landscape bring out the kid in you drawing you closer for a climb....or at least the thought of it and the admiration of the opportunity that awaits your child. Fairhope is home to several festivals throughout the year, Arts & Crafts is an annual tradition at the onset of Spring.
The city of Fairhope was created in 1894 by a group of idealists who set out to create a single tax colony. Although not a true single tax community as defined by Henry George, but the original colonists created a close second. They acquired land in the name of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation (it was called the Fairhope Industrial Association until 1904), then leased the land to those who wanted to use or live on the land. Lessees have a 99 year renewable lease on the land, but have ownership of improvements on the land. Everyone buying a house on Colony land is required to attend a short orientation session, where they are informed that although they own the house, they are only leasing the land. For example mineral rights are reserved for the Single Tax Corporation and owners may not operate a dirt pit.
The quaint community of Fairhope may not be the definition of a true single tax colony but it is a true Utopia and living here makes life a little sweeter each day!
