Srpingtime in Upstate SCYou'll find that there is no place on earth that is more beautiful than springtime in Upstate South Carolina! The eye-popping fuschias of the azaleas, the purity of white blending with the creaminess and pale pinks of dogwoods, the palette of greens framing it all... It's like heaven on earth!

While this year's temperatures have been higher than normal, it and the evening thunderstorms have brought us a bounty of striking colors and views. Whether you're in the big city of Greenville or an hour away in the foothills of the Smokies, you're treated to wonderful panoramas. That's why I love to call the Upstate my home!

And if you don't want to leave the city but still want to enjoy nature, there is no better time to visit one of the best kept secrets of the Upstate: The Swamp Rabbit Trail, one of the great projects of the Greenville Parks system. Running along the Reedy River for over 17 miles from Travelers Rest through parts of Greenville and beyond, this first leg of a planned web of paved trails throughout the Upstate is the perfect place to stretch your legs and your mind. Families, single bikers or bike groups, runners, walkers, joggers, nature lovers, geocachers, or moms just letting their kids enjoy the outdoors... everyone flocks to enjoy this wonderful amenity.

The Trail is easy to access at a multitude of points and a great place to get some fresh air and exercise, as well as meet a variety of interesting and smiling people.

And you can enjoy more than just the exercise and nature! Depending on where you are on the greenway, you might stop for a mocha at Leopard Forest Coffee Co., meander through neighborhoods, or have a snack on the deck overlooking the Trail at The Cafe at Williams Hardware; take a detour to enjoy Furman University's lake and trails; or stop after crossing the Reedy River for a cool drink or lunch at any one of a myriad of Downtown Greenville places that continue to pop up along the Trail. Every mile has something different and enjoyable to offer.

There's even "an app for that" for your Android or iPhone! ArcGIS by ESRI provides a mobile app for the Swamp Rabbit, or you can check out the online map to plan before you leave home.
