First Things First

Ever since I received my New iPad a few weeks ago I've been as efficient as ever; new Apps, new strategies, new organizational tools, etc.  It's been great to say the least.

This weekend however I had a bit of an epiphany.  While going through my "checklist" of things to do I saw two of my younger children through our front windows.  They were kicking the soccer ball and having a great time... without me!  I was so absorbed in my "To Do" lists that I had lost sight for a moment of the things that matter most; namely my family.  The whole purpose behind technology for me is to be more efficient and allow me to spend more time with the family.  Sitting on the couch on a day off working on my iPad doesn't exactly fit the criteria I've just described.

Doing things that don't matter is like drinking water that cannot quench thirst, or like having a fire that doesn't provide warmth.

As we move into another week of what is turning out to be a fantastic 2012 I hope we can all find the purpose behind the doing.  Whether we're talking about social media, the launch of a new marketing campaign, or phone calls to clients, answering the "why" behind the action can give us clarity and direction.  I'm often asked "should I be doing more social networking or should I go back to the basics with farming options?"  My answer is always the same; "It depends on what you want to accomplish."  The answer is often in the why.

The first quarter of the year has come and gone.  If you're not happy with your year to date results take a hard look at your business plan.  Do your actions and goals lead to the same end?  Have you asked yourself why?

Keep priorities in order. Easy to get so involved with things that are not that important. I see successful people with personal lives all messed up. Are they really the successful ones?
