Paper Clips, Pennies, and Stars - OH MY!

By

So you think you can multi-task?  Think again.  Today our office had a 3 hour training session on goal-setting for 2008.  May seem a little late in 2007 to be doing this for those of you who completed this task in October, but better late than never.  The program is quite simple assuming one knows the gross commission income desired, the conversion rate of appointments to contracts, and the conversion rate from contracts to closings.  Commission rates and average sale price need to be factored in as well.  It's less than an hour of work to produce the numbers required to state the goals, so most of us should be done by year's end.  But, I digress.

Digressing is the point of this post, really.  Regarding the multi-tasking, one demonstration was a big AHA! to me.  It pitted multi-tasking against focused singular activity.  Essentially, time-blocking with the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the office door versus leaving the door open and letting everyone and his brother/sister to interrupt the activities.  What a revelation!

Two volunteers were each given two plastic bags containing ten pennies in one bag and ten paper clips in thepaper clipspennies other bag.  They also needed pen and paper handy.  The goal was the same; the ten pennies would be stacked, the paper clips would be attached, and ten stars would be drawn on the paper.  The first volunteer was instructed to stack a penny, attach a paper clip, and draw a star, then repeat until done.  The second volunteer was told to stack all the pennies, attach all the paper clips, and draw all the stars, not stopping the singular tasks until they were each complete.  Do I need to tell youstars who won?  Do I need to mention that the first volunteer was flustered in this timed trial of ability that was doomed to failure?

Yet this is how many of us run our businesses.  We think we can multi-task and in attempting to do so, patting ourselves on the back and running around looking important, we are just wasting effort that could be spent on other activities or, YIKES!, down time with our family and friends.  Realtors are a social bunch by nature and we don't like to be told how to run our businesses; that is quite possibly why we chose this business in the first place.  We are entitled to life outside of real estate though.  Really, we are.

This year is going to be different for me.  I am going to be a machine, for specific designated hours of the day and days of the week.  Do not disturb, at risk of...harsh words in a raised voice....  (I'm not the violent sort.)  Outside those times you can find me doing those things I haven't done for the three years I have been in this business:  tending to my ornamental gardens, sewing for my home, my children, and me, cooking (yes, kids, we are going to have dinner again), reading fiction, seeing our friends for fun (yoohoo! remember us?), and maybe finally getting enough sleep.  The laundry will be done on a timely basis, probably while watching TV - there's an example of useful multi-tasking since each activity requires only half of the brain.  I cannot wait to start this new routine.  It's going to be a great new year!do not disturbI've got to go now and finish the online continuing ed I signed up for two days ago, due by 12/31/07.  I'll be back later.  GRRRRRR.......

Good point and put in such an easy and favorable idea of how things should be done and complete the task.

Hi Susan:  You Go Girl !  At first when I started reading this, I thought it was going to be silly, but it ended up proving a point.  Thanks for sharing.  Take care...

What a wonderful exercise in why focusing on one task at a time works well.  Good luck with your 2008 Goals!

The way that I think about this is that the agent who focused on one task at a time was continually moving forward, while the other agent was going in circles. Singular focus and time blocking are great concepts to keep in mind as we move into 2008.

Susan,

Your post is wonderful, IMHO one of the best I've seen in a while, I just loved it, thank you.  And so very true in many ways. First of all, my congrats to your company for the business/goal planning as a broker myself.

Your "do not disturb" time is great, something I can really appreciate. It's also about setting personal boundaries for your own success. In my prior coaching group we practiced "remodel" time. It's a time of the day, or a portion of one day of the week, whatever works for you that we work "on" our business and not "in" our business. It's a concept from the E-Myth, and I can tell you it absolutely works!

Thanks for commenting everyone!  My goals for 2008 are so out of sight I can't even believe it!  I get it, I can do it, I am going to succeed!  In Michigan!!! one of the worst foreclosure states in the nation, I have nearly capped, plenty of time to complete that by 3/15/08, my anniversary date, and I haven't been doing half of it right!  I expect to work less and earn more if I put into practice what I have learned.  I have come a loooooong way, and as my team leader says, I am the perfect example of never giving up.  I have accepted the invitation to be on our ALC (Agent Leadership Council) this year in our KW office.  It feels great after the first two difficult years.  Thanks for all of your kind words!

An agent in our office hangs a sign on his door "Do not disturb" during certain hours so he can work uninterrupted.  Gee.  I thought he loved talking to me whenever a thought popped into my head that I just had to share!  (In all seriousness, I think he has a great idea doing this!)

Here's to a wonderful 2008 for you Susan!

Sorry, I missed it, Brian sent me the materials. Too much in my life right now, today a Professional Standards hearing and inspection. I use to hang a "Do not disturb" sign on my door when I was in the office, everyone thought they were the exception because they were my friends.

Kris and Missy, I told my kids yesterday that I was going to schedule them in from 7 to 8 PM.  They were not amused!
