Albuquerque Firefighters Win $10,000 In Mega Lotto & Pay It Forward

Albuquerque Firefighters Win $10,000 In Mega Lotto, Pay It forward, John McCormack, Realtor, Albuquerque Homes Realty

At the last minute a group of Albuquerque Firefighters everyone in Station 8 went in on the Lotto pool. The captain, lieutenant, two drivers and a firefighter and yep they won $10,000!  After dividing it up they each walked away with about $1400 a person.  So what’s the first thing they did?  They turned around and donated their share to a fellow firefighter and friend in need of brain surgery.

The friend and fellow firefighter is 24-year-old Vince Cordova.  Vince has served as a firefighter for three years and has a rare brain tumor.  Vince is facing huge amounts in medical bills.  So this will really help him and his family out.  Firefighter Vince is now at St. Vincent Medical Center, waiting on a specialized surgery that will remove the two golf ball-sized tumors from his brain.

Firefighter Jed Hyland stated, “Firefighters are family and when firefighters are called upon to help one of their own, they do,” "The brotherhood in the fire department is so strong. We help our own on and off work. We're family,"

Firefighter Vince Cordova says. "I'm so blessed, I have so much support. It's awesome."  Vince Cordova’s brain surgery will take place at 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday April 4, 2012. All he's asking for is prayers and more prayers.  The donation and act of paying it forward will actually be going to the Albuquerque Firefighter Survivors Fund, which will mostly be helping Cordova but could also benefit other firefighters in need.

John- What a wonderful story. All I've heard about with the lotto is in reference to people fighting over it in MD. This is refreshing and much more up my alley. I hope the surgery goes well for Vince. Sending prayers his way.

Hi John,

Awesome post and I love how you found the picture of them holding the check. This made the national news and God Bless them all and the fireman who is having brain surgery too. I heard something real neat about police officers and firemen recently. Everyone has been saying negative things about them and their pensions lately and this summed it up nicely. "Firemen and Policemen go places and take big risks that most of the population would never dare to go". These people deserve a big hand and this good deed just shows what a good heart this bunch of guys have.

You like making old men cry Q Man?  You just did with this story.  This is probably one of the best "pay it forward" stories I've read in a long time.  God Bless those men who donated their winnings to a fellow firefighter in need.  That's a "WOW!" in my book.

John,

There are the givers and the takers.  Clearly, first responders belong to the giver category.  Thanks for an inspiring post.

Hello my friends and fellow bloggers.  Thanks to each of you for your responses, your thoughts and prayers!  I know Vince, his family and the brave and caring men of Station 8 must appreciate each of you as well.  These men stepped up, looked past their own wants & needs and offered not only their winnings but their support for Mr. Vince Cordova.  Life is just better when each of us take on the role of paying it forward.  God Bless each of you and may Gods love wrap around Vince, his family and his true comrades and friends.

Update on Vince:

Last night the local news updated Vince's story with the announcement he did have brain surgery.  There were complications but he is responsive and talked to his Mother after surgery.  We have friends that know his fellow firefighters well and are suppose to keep us updated as things progress.  Please keep in mind Vince has asked for prayers so let's not let him down.
