Why not be proactive?

By
Mortgage and Lending with Mission Hills Mortgage Bankers

I was just responding to a comment posted in the "Is this a typical loan scenario" blog. After reading this blog and the comments for the past several days, I realized that the tone was changing. Amidst my response, I realized an idea that I personally thought deserves a blog of its' own.

I was commenting that the lending and real estate industries are in the news and other media in a very negative light. Those who have provoked this negative image, the image is rightfully deserved. However, I believe that there are plenty of lending and real estate professionals that do not subscribe to the same predatory and down right vulgar business practices or philosophies.

My thought is why not take the same media engines and use them to our advantage. I feel a sincere change campaign needs to be waged. Why don't we take it upon ourselves to draft that change, present it to the powers that be, and get it implemented. Why not be proactive instead of demanding that someone else be responsible for mandating that change? Let's mandate it ourselves and put it into action.

I'm very interested in "hearing" your thoughts.

I think you are absolutely right.  It is time to take the bull by the horns so to speak and get all the good news we can out there.  I am tired of hearing it personally.  It makes us all look bad. Let's get after it.

Great thought and I agree with you 100%. NAR has already begun a campaign to try and change the public's perception of today's housing market. Unfortunately we face an uphill battle trying to compete with the mass media on getting our message out. Bad news sells, the media knows it, and those are the stories they're going to run with. We, as Real Estate Professionals, need to be pro-active and have a sort of grass roots effort to get our message across to those who need to know - buyers, sellers, and borrowers.

Suzanne, Im in if you're in. Anyone have any ideas where we start? I think a positive brain storming session is a good place. What kinds of regulations do we want? Who should oversee those regulations? What should the rules be? Should they be state specific, or industry wide?

Jim, YES!! That is exactly what I am suggesting. Maybe another good place to start is, for each of those who is willing to participate, write a letter to the editor of the local paper and forward a copy of that letter to the evening news anchor person. I am all for writing letters to people. As long as "we" can get a couple of media locations to take notice and put us out there, the rest will follow suit.

The media loves a juicy story.  They just make most of us look bad, because of a few bad ones.  You never see a dateline that has an awesome agent on it and help someone get the home of their dreams.

Troy, thank you for doing your part. If everyone else would follow suit, we could get things accomplished much faster. Feel free to share any idea that might come to you in the middle of the night. ;)

Sounds good to me.  We need to buy a TV station and do a lot of profiles on good agents.

Kerry- Good idea. But I'm not quite sure that the consumer is trusting anything currently. The negative spin has been running for months. Good Luck.

Mark, I know. But like I said, why not try to change that viewpoint? It has to start somewhere and with someone. Why not those of us that are tired of the less than qualified, less than honest.

Does anyone have a great success story they would like to share? A story that shows the power of honesty, integrity and conscientious behavior? A story of a deal that no other lender could do and you were able to do it, or find a lender to do it?

This is what the media needs to hear.
