Letting Go

By
Real Estate Agent with Right at Home Realty Inc., Brokerage

Some people become very attached to their home and after deciding to move can get upset and have difficulty accepting the loss of this personal space.  Below are some tips to help ease the feeling of loss.

  • Don’t think of your house as your home but as real estate property that is to be bought and sold.  Depersonalize your space and start packing away photos, mementos, knick-knacks and any items that have particular meaning to you.  This will help potential buyers to visualize your space as their new home.
  • Get rid of excess items.  If you are downsizing, you need to let go of excess furnishings.  Give them away to a charity.  It is difficult to part with some belongings, but you will probably want to purchase some new things for your new home.  A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it in the last 2 years, you probably never will.  Say goodbye.  Someone else can use it.  Once it is out of your sight, it’s likely you won’t even remember it.
  • LakeThere is a reason you are moving, larger home, more practical, better location, etc.  Focus on these reasons and look forward to your new home.  It makes it much easier to let go of the old one.
  • Throw a good-bye party and take pictures of each room to remember.Say farewell to give yourself closure.Every home has its memories, but in the end, it is just bricks and mortar.Family and friends are what matter most and you can still keep it touch with them.

exactly, when I speak with sellers I make a point of calling it a house or property, I never use the word home... great point!

Gail,

So many people like to leave everything in place until they are actually moving.

Gail, it is especially hard when someone is attached and has to come back and see it was demolished or remodled, sad but reality as said from a builders wife.

Gail- letting go is hard especially when there are so many fond memories.   Throwing a good bye party for the house is a good idea.  It says we're moving on...

True, it is hard to leave all of those memories.  Life is full of change and you are much happier if you can mentally move on.
