Can you stop the ringing?

While striving to get through my continuing education credits for my license, it has become very apparent that our cell phone rule our lives (not to mention our business)!

Most of my classemates can't make it, 10 minutes into the class, before you see them grab their phone and look at the screen.  I explain to all my active clients that will be in class from such and such a time till such and such a time.  Please leave me a detailed message and I will get back to you during a break with the answer.  Then I shut off my ringer and proceed to learn.  My clients and associates understand that they're very important and I will get back to them in a timely manner.

I think the worst case scenarios are in a crowded classroom, when somebody's cell phone rings and they try to ignore it.  It seems that it's always one of those cutesy rings that can't be ignored.  The instructor usually has to stop while everyone looks towards where the sound is coming from.  Come on people, cell phones have been around for about 10 years in everyday use and we all know how to shut off the ringer.

After the third interruption in my last class, the instructor pleaded with the class, if for some reason they have to take a call to please step out and take it in the hallway outside the classroom.  Not 10 minutes later someone else's phone rang and instead of taking their whole purse out of the classroom they dug through until they found their phone and then answered it.  I couldn't believe it.

How do you feel about cell phone etiquette or the lack of such?

Paul - it is a fight without winners. But hey, what's the problem turning off the phone. My last class, the instructor posted a rule that if the phone rang, it was $25.

Believe me, our phones did not ring

Boy, you are so right Paul!  Like Jon, our last class instructor in Continuing Education said the person whos phone rang would have to put $10 into a koa bowl.  A minute later HIS PHONE rang!  In went the first ten dollars.  End of the class, there was $100 in the hat.  The person with their birthday nearest the day of the class won!  They had to prove it with their driver's license.

I have always wondered about the monetary fines and what happens if someone refuses to pay? How much would this disrupt a class?

I dont think its that hard to shut the ringer off and leave it in front of you if your expecting that big call and grab it quick and leave the room.

Paul,

It shows a lack of respect for the instructor, and other students. There are very few real estate "emergencies" that can't wait until the end of a CE class.

Because the first instruction in those situations is always either put your phone on vibrate or turn off the ringer it shows you have no respect for any of the participants there.  People will remember that, I do!

Shut off the phone. Agents are addicted to their phones. Always checking their emails, texting. Ugh.

I am always amazed at how people walk and constantly are looking at their cell phones as if life would end if they did not take time away. Keep those thumbs working

Well,

it is such a bad taste and disrespectful manners if someone does not turn off the phone when he/she is asked to.

We are all busy, but if you have a meeting or class~ please, shut that d.....d thing off!

Nothing bad will happen if you call them back in 20-40 min!

Its just rude to interupt a whole class with a phone ringing, at least turn it on vibrate.

I was out to dinner and saw a couple at a table he had a e reader and was reading, and she was texting...

"Hi, I want to sell my house and buy a larger one.  I am looking for a listing agent, whom I would expect to use as my buyers agent, too.  Would you be interested?"

"Sure!"

"It is a new world out there.  Are you Tech Savvy?"

"I don't know how to turn off my cell phone..."

"Next!"

Im always on my phone, but if Im in a class room or church, my cell phone is off or silent. This way I can ensure it wont interrupt what is going on. Its RUDE! The people that try to ignore it are irritating. You know its your phone. Turn it off right away.

I just finished the ABR course which covered all 12 credits ... THANK GOD ... LOLOLO .... It was given at our local board, so I was fortunate ... The FIRST RULE of the class - was to turn off cell phones ... or DONATE $10.00 to RPAC ... most agents did put the phone on vibrate or turned them off ...  I think 2 got caught ...

However - to answer your question .. I do find it rude when I am physically speaking with another person and they are interrupted by the cell phone - put their hand up and answer the call ...  RUDE ...

I usually wait for the person to stop talking and let the call go into voice mail ... same if I am out showing homes with clients ... i let the call go into voice mail and return the call when they clients are previewing the home - NATURALLY, after I showed the finer points ... My voice mail explains that I am 1) either driving - I dont use the ear piece, nor do I answer when there are others in the car (over the radio) AND 2) that I have currently tied up and will return the call ASAP ... and when I do, I explain that I respect everyones TIME and this happened to be that particular clients TIME ... that the caller can expect the same when they are out with me.

THE ONLY CALL I IMMEDIATELY take is from my son ....

THanks for sharing and allowing me to VENT!

HI PAUL!  I don't think people are that important that they can't turn their phones off for a short time.  Or at least put it on vibrate - which I do when I am doing anything where a cell phone might interrupt and be considered rude.  And if my phone does go off - I only answer and leave the room if it is my daughter - anything else can be handled later!
