Helping Kids Adjust to a Relocation - Things for Kids to Do in Carlsbad and Nearby

Relocating to a new community from a distance with kids, especially older ones, can be a challenge. Leaving friends behind and everything they enjoy and are familiar with is tough on everyone.

When you couple that with the fact they may not know anything about the new community, which makes it feel that much more foreign, plus having to meet new kids and start a new school, you have a major emotional situation, for kids and their parent(s).

Researching your new community can help the kids adjust

Bringing some reality to the move by a visit or two, combined with some fun times and activities the kids enjoy – sort of a vacation - can help make the move feel perhaps a bit more comfortable before it actually happens.

Taking time to learn about the new home, and all that the community offers, can help bridge the gap of old and new. And with kids’ familiarity with technology these days learning about the new home is relative easy. Plus they might really enjoy the research.

As with listings, I think photos and videos help to make the new home more of a reality for those who are relocating, and our blogs can do just that for kids who are moving. The visuals make the new home real, and something they can more readily identify with.

Providing guidance to those who are relocating and information about the new community, and especially things to do and see, could make a huge difference. They are buying a community, not just a house, so it’s useful to cover a broad range of information.

Take it a step further and target your information to the specific interests of the kids and parents? Find out what they like to do – hobbies, activities, interests, lifestyle – and provide more personal details. You can send emails with links to blog articles that specifically address these targeted interests, such as sports. You can also send along newspapers and local magazines (we have a bimonthly Carlsbad magazine that is chock full of great information about all there is to do here).

Being a resource for where to find information, such as schools (e.g., School Digger, Great Schools) is also important.

Jeff, I remember a teenager who was really depressed about a move to DC.  When we took him to the house that his parents adored, he said, "Mom.  Dad.  I'd rather live in a tent!"  He did get over it, but I remmeber feeling a little useless in the situation.  Hope I do better next time - after reading Part 2!

Jeff - I have clients relocating to Palos Verdes this summer.  Yesterday I sent the parents a link to all the tennis clubs in the area as their oldest son plays tennis.  As the mother of four children, I know it is important to start preparing teenagers for the move by connecting them with their favorite sports and activities in the new location.

Pat - it can certainly be a challenge, and while we can't necessarily thange that we can provide information that may help.

Norma - preparation in as many ways as possible IS key. It helps when we put ourselves in out clients' shoes and consider the issues they are dealing with. Having relocated a bunch of times with kids and pets I know what it's like.

You know there are so many children involved in the moving process. I'm surprized we don't have more posts that target children and the move.  Very nice post.

Cindy

It really is true - I would say about 1/3 of my relocations involve children, too. There is a lot to think about.

Perhaps this will spur some more posts on the topic. I have an older one from my Relcoation blog I may update a post here.

Jeff, moving is especially tough on teenagers and pre-teen aged children. Good to give the parents ammo to help them adjust.

Jeff,  I know that most if not all parents are concerned about how their children will adapt to a new community. But I would assume that most do very little to seek out things to help them adapt to a new community, and depend on the new friends that they make at school to do that for them..  If they were aware of ideas like this, maybe they would take a more active part.

The good thing is that there is so much to do in the summer for kids and teens in Carlsbad and Encinitas. So, hopefully, anyone moving before the school year can make fast friends.

Hmmm... this sounds like something agents could do to promote their business. "I have a relocation packet just for kids - write me!"

Jeff, Good information. As a listing agent, I help prepare the children who are moving and how to say goodbye to their current home.
