If you build it, they will come.
One of my favorite movies to watch is Field of Dreams, I get a good feeling watching Kevin Costner follow that voice. If you have seen the movie, you know that Costner’s character, Ray Kensilla, moves to Iowa with his wife and they become farmers growing corn. But Ray hears a voice that tells him that, “If you build it, they will come”.
It has been my experience, improving real estate for 25 years, that I have followed that voice. When I first started as a handyman and willing to do anything to pay my mortgage and feed my family. It became apparent that building a business was just as important as doing the work. If I could build a business that people wanted, they would come.
I didn’t hear the voice that Ray heard, but I knew that I needed to do things differently than the rest of the herd. It wasn’t only about the money, sometimes I had to do the right thing. I didn’t want to get business the same way that the other guys were trying, so I had to do things that others didn’t understand. I had to trust in that inner voice that guided me in making those decisions.
The movie ends with Ray having an experience that he was not expecting when he started, I think that also holds true for me. What began as a moment of desperation has turned into a career that has been greater than I had expected.
