Thank You For UNSubscribing To My Blog

Real Estate Broker/Owner with North Shore Suburbs & Chicago Real Estate

Give UpWhen I first joined ActiveRain about five months ago, I had no clue what “subscribing to someone’s blog” actually meant.  Basically, I would read a blog, perhaps leave a comment, click “Subscribe” if I really liked it, and then off I’d go.  Since that time, however, I’ve discovered many wonderful members whose blogs I enjoy on a regular basis.  As a result, I’ve been building up daily reading and commenting -- while slowly increasing subscribership.

"Thank You For Subscribing To My Blog" says the subject line of the email I typically receive after subscribing to someone’s blog.  By the way, I've discovered that sending a "Thank You For Subscribing" email is a nice, thoughtful, neighborly practice that I need to start implementing.  In fact, I would be delighted to begin practicing right now if you'd like to subscribe to my blog?  But, what about unsubscribing from someone’s blog?  I certainly wouldn't want to develop a reputation as "the ActiveRain member who unsubscribes from other member's blogs!"

While scanning the latest posts from my favorite bloggers, I'm seeing bloggers at the bottom of my subscription list who haven’t posted anything in awhile.  In fact, some haven’t posted a blog in months.  And, they never seem to come back.  I think to myself, "perhaps I should just “Unsubscribe” from their blogs – yet something stops me.  For some reason, I’m afraid to hit the "Unsubscribe" button!  What if I get an unpleasant email in return?

Doesn’t it feel weird to unsubscribe from someone’s blog?
Is there some unspoken protocol for unsubscribing?  I wouldn't want to insult anyone, but if somebody hasn't posted a blog in months, chances are he or she won't even notice that I'm gone, right?  It’s just that I prefer to keep my ActiveRain subscription list current and up-to-date by giving it a quick overhaul from time to time.  So tell me ... what’s an ActiveRain Newbie to do?

I have a few that have not posted in a year or more, that I have thought about dumping, but then again- the stay at the bottom of the list, and if they do resurface I will know.. and maybe there is a reason for their absence?

It has crossed my mind a time or two but have not been able to bring myself to do it.  Like Robert said perhaps there are unknown reasons they have not blogged in a while. Thoughtful post.  Thanks.

I've unsubscribed to a few but it wasn't due to lack of interaction it was due to (IMO) unethical or bad behavior in the Rain.  Rude, crude etc... you get the point.  Just because your subscribers are not commenting doesn't mean they're not clicking on your post so check out your numbers I bet you're getting more views than you think.  Try not to take a non-commenter personally.

It does feel really awkward to me too when I try to decide whether to unsubscribe to a blog....kind of like I'm not sure they'd notice, but i don't want to hurt their feelings if they DO know. Very similar to trying to decide to unfriend someone on Facebook.

I have unsubcribed from a few blogs because the people haven't been active in months or haven't written in months.  There's no point in subscribing to someone like that.

I have unsubscribed from a couple of blogs as well.  When I initially subscribed, I thought the blogs were informational and insightful.  As I continued to read, I realized they did not always have content that I wanted to continue to receive.  The first time I unsubscribed, I did feel bad, but we all change as does our content.

I've only unsubscribed once and it was because I really found myself annoyed by their posts. I had made a mistake. So that was a real "unsubscribe" but those who are not active. First....they are not active and probably wouldn't notice, but also, they are at the bottom of my scroll, so it really doesn't matter.

Robert:  Wow ... a year or more?  Thanks for your perspective ... I hadn't thought about it like that before.

Mary:  Thanks!  It's funny how you and I haven't been able to bring ourselves to do it :)  I agree ... Robert had an interesting perspective.

John:  Thank you for your thoughts and encouragement.  I can't even believe anyone would post something rude, crude, unethical, etc. here ... wow!

Nancy:  Awkward is the perfect word to describe it.  And, you're right ... it is very much like unfriending someone on FB :)

Bryan:  That's how I've been feeling, too!

Kathy:  Sounds like you know exactly how I feel!  Thanks for sharing your experience with this issue ... I appreciate it very much :)

Karen:  Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.  Sounds like there is a difference between "real" unsubscribes and just "forgetting" about the remaining "inactives" at the bottom.  Still figuring out how things go around here :)

Carie - I have unsubscribed to a handful of folks. My criteria is that if they haven't written a post for over a year and are no longer a rainmaker then they aren't coming back. If they do, then they will get a big "welcome back" and I'll re-subscribe.

Just noticed congrats on passing the 50K point mark... Now you're over half way to the grand 100K mark and it's a really big whoop!

John:  Aren't you sweet ... I can't believe you noticed!!  Thank you so much for stopping back to leave such a nice and thoughtful message :)  Looking forward to hitting the 100K mark!

Margaret:  Leave 'em at the bottom ... LOL!  I really love your way with words :)  And, thanks so much for the congrats!

Carrie,  I have unsubscribed to a few folks for various reasons. Some for lack of activity and some because I was turned off by some posts or comments they made.  I would not take it personally. It you feel you need or want to unsubscribe ... do it. You can always subscribe again!

Carie~ I am so glad you asked this question! I was wondering about this too.. as I would not want to ... be mean to somebody... but if somebody is rude or crude or annoying in general then the unsubscribe button would be easy to push...  Glad to read the comments here!
