Sometimes disasters happen and here in Fontana that's as likely to be an earthquake as it is a flood (Southern California has a lot going for it, but it's not without some danger!). I know you've seen reports of pets lost or injured during an emergency situation like that, where the owners can't be found and the poor animals are left to fend for themselves. I don't think it's ever easy to see that, even more so if you're a pet owner. Luckily, you CAN take steps to prepare for your pets safety in a natural disaster just like you would with your family!

The City of Rancho Cucamonga (sister-city to Fontana) has created an incredibly useful collection of webpages that will instruct you on how to prepare as well as what to do in case the unthinkable happens. What's even better is the information covers LOTS of disasters, not just SoCal specific ones, so you can share it with your family and friends in other states.

Here are a list of the topics, along with links to the pages:

An Ounce of Prevention
Preparing Your Pets
During the Disaster
After the Disaster
If Your Pet is Lost in a Disaster
Special Consideration for Specific Disasters

If you have a pet, or are thinking of getting one, I strongly urge you to check out the above pages. When you're in the middle of a disaster, it is critical for the safety of your pet that you know where to go and what to do.

Mike:

Preparing for a disaster with your pet in mind is so important.  I am surprised that there is not more information.  I am a CERT(Alameda Community Emergency Response Team member) and we do a lot of exercised with humans in mind.  We need to focus on pets.  Thanks for the info.

Mike~Evelyn is SO right on this one!  My husband runs an EMS company, and also volunteers in our community as a paramedic, but there is DEFINITELY NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION for pets put in this situation.

Good information to pass on and I have bookmarked this to go to those links later or even have them on my local Resource List.

Please put up some photos, we judges like to see that!

Mike, thinking about disaster readiness before the event occurs is key to having as smooth of a solution as possible.  What is impossible though is trying to figure it out during the crisis.

p.s. Gayle is right.
