Tough Times for Some People with Pets - Please Help

By

We are all too aware that this economy is taking a toll of all of us.  All we need to do is stop by our favorite gas station and pay for a tank of gasoline or stop in at the grocery store for "a few things".  Ouch!

There are many people who are being forced to give up their pets to friends or the local animal shelter because the owners can't afford to feed them.  This is such a sad situation for the pets and their owners.

I love animals and I can only imagine how heartbreaking it would be to have to drop off my pet at an animal shelter.  Pets are a big part of our families.

If at all possible, please take a bag of dog food or cat food by your local animal shelter - they are in desperate need of help right now!   A small donation each month to the shelter would be a generous gift.

One of the groups who are being hurt by this economy are our senior citizens who love and need their pets.  These precious pets are such a comfort for seniors who are not able to socialize much because of their health.  If you know of someone in this situation, please step up to the plate and help.

I never thought about giving pet food to an animal shelter....ours is run by our city, which is in great financial shape. But I wonder if shelters in general allow families to bring pets, and if they need help. You really started me thinking.

The employees at our animal shelters are all volunteers.  Our community really respects the shelter and helps with a lot of donations.

This is so true! Be sure you take your pet to a no kill shelter, otherwise they only last there a bit over two weeks. If an older person needs money for food... I would buy it for them.

Michael - I try to take food as often as I can and they are always so appreciative.

Karen - Ours is run by the City, too, but they always need dog or cat food and volunteers.

Captain Wayne - Aren't the volunteers wonderful!

Sussie - It would be nice to help out an older person who really struggles to make ends meet,  Pets can be such good company.

A few years ago I had a friend who had to give up her cat because her husband got Alizheimer's.  He was not steady and they had a cat that loved to be under foot.  I wanted to take her, but had 5 pets already and could not.  I was heart broken, but did understand her plight.  So sometimes it's not even the economy that does it.

I also try to help out my local shelter as much as I can.

Thanks for sharing this.  We have heard a lot in Phoenix about displaced pets too.  People don't often think about their pets when they are financially or emotionally stressed.

How true!  Especially true for people with horses, that do not have a lot of acreage.  So sad to see horses in a bad situation.  Another place that could use donations is Mobile Meals or Meals on Wheels, usually to low income, elderly, or shut-ins.  Great blog!

Tammy - That is heartbreaking!  Our pets are so important to us - I know that was a very difficult decision.

Jennie - Thank you.  Pets know so much and can feel it when we are stressed.

Debbie - Horses aren't immune from this bad economy, are they:(   The animal shelters in our area accept horses too - I pray they can find good homes.

Pam, we've often held pet food drives to help ease the burden for local foster families or other who just need a little help keeping their pets fed during tough times.
