Who Wins In A Street Fight: Email Marketing vs Facebook Pages?

Timeline is coming to Facebook Pages!!!!

Oh my!!!

Gamechanger?

I no thinky…

If you don’t have an open mind… if you think life begins and ends on facebook… that Mark Zuckerberg is the second coming… if you would rather trust your gut vs looking at facts and figures… you can stop reading this blogpost. You will not likey what I gots to share.

However, if you are committed to making a professional level of profit and are more focused on achieving your goals vs the tactics or tools you use… boy oh boy, you are gonna love the goodies I got for ya today.

Let’s Get Ready To Ruuumblllllllllllllllllllllle…

Who wins a street fight: Email Marketing or Facebook Pages?

You’d think with all the hype about facebook pages changing to timeline format lately, that this is somehow going to save your business.

Like somehow getting the right cover photo on your timeline is the  ”magic bullet” to increasing transactions.

Luckily, I know because you are on my blog and you are still reading my blog post, you are too smart to fall for the tricks and hype like that… but lets go deeper in to some numbers and facts.

Facebook Pages

Allfacebook.com reports that only…. listen carefully… come closer…. that only 3% to 7.5% of your Likers even see your Page’s posts. YIKERS!!!

The data was collected and compiled from PageLever.

Email Marketing

On average… you are going to get a 15-20% open rate on your emails *BAM*

I myself get just under a 25% open rate on every email *POW*

Nielsen data finds that 41.6% of U.S. mobile use time is spent on email vs that of social media, which only makes up 10% of users’ time on the mobile Web. *KAPOW*

It seems pretty obvious to me who won this street fight… so, why do people insist on pushing facebook pages so aggressively?

I don’t know… why do people play slot machines… why do people watch Ben Affleck movies… why do people drink diet coke while eating a bag of potato chips… why do people complain about $4.00 a gallon gas but pay $4.25 for 16 ounces of Starbucks coffee…

The point… people do things and say things that don’t make sense.

You have to sort that out. And I know you can and I know you will. Because you are a smart, savvy business owner that wants to make a professional level of profit.

Now… I know for a fact that setting up Email Marketing is not easy for many people.

  • Picking the provider
  • Selecting a template
  • Knowing what to send
  • Finding time to create the content
  • Guessing at how often to send

I do think setting up a Facebook Page is miles easier than Email Marketing and that’s why it’s pushed so hard…

But I know you know, that what is easy doesn’t matter. You care about results. And the proof is in the pudding, Email Marketing brings the results like thunder brings the rain.

Celeste:  I am sorry, but even with all of the Rumbles, the Bams and the Pows... I really cannot see how the impersonal nature of either Facebook or Email Marketing would be programs I would want to use.  Personal referrals... you know, that "face to face" stuff... well, the averages of them working are just through the roof when compared to Email and Facebook... or at least they are for me.

I have been face-to-facing for years and years... and I will admit that someone just starting out might thinks a plan like mine takes too long to get cooking.

But... I am so glad if they work well for you in your marketing program.  Just as all real estate is local, all marketing programs are personal.

I am going to agree about email marketing being more powerful than Facebook. I use email for sending my monthly newsletter to by data base and get more opens than people coming to my facebook page.

Karen - Bravo to your face to face marketing plan - I am a big fan and think that one on one communication is what will ultimately get the job done.  Email marketing is a great strategy to get those conversations started and keep them going years into the future.

Linda - Your experience mirrors what I hear over and over again.  Thank you for sharing your results.

I know that Face Book PAGE doesn't work for me. Just my personal Face Book worked until Mark decided to muck it up. Now everyone gets to see only a portion of what their friends post and vise-versa. So that too is not really working for me like it was before.

I am not even sure if you add @ before someones name that all their friends get to see the message anymore.

I think some of drip campaigns work.... I use to do my own, but even now Yahoo has given me problems so I have used Grass Hopper. But I still haven't found the one that I really am in love with. I keep searching.

I'd like to see a monthly Newsletter drip campain for men that speaks to boating, fishing, hunting, racing, etc..... I have been searching for that one. If anyone knows of one that I may cut and paste onto an email please let me know so I can utilize it.

Great Post!

Great ideas! Facebook gets so much play but email is the special niche tha if you can look real and not spamtastic, then you hit some great targets! :)

Love and light,

I like face to face. But sometimes it's email. I have not found Facebook to be worth anything for me. Does anyone have a email program or service they love? Thanks!

I got hits to my website from Facebook Pages and Ads, but very little actual business, I think contacting clients who are familiar with you would result in a better ROI.

Hi Celeste, Well you know I am a big fan of Happy Grasshopper and my clients love getting the emails and I love thier replies.

I did want to mention this month was the first month I had two people wonder if I had a virus on my computer and that's how they received my email. the subject was titled Limitations?

I was told one reason was becuase it was a long link, the other person thought it was spam becuse of the title. I hope you don't mind me mentioning it but thought it was odd, and like I said, it was the first time.

I think I'm up to over 40-45% for open rate with happy grasshopper. I have noticed that if my email is remotely housing related (eg ikea house or living in a bunker) the open rate is much higher. Please continue to include at least one (maybe 2) housing emails in your selections.
