What's All The Fuss About QR Codes?

BizprintSolutions.comIn my post the other day, I was asked by a fellow ActiveRain member if it's good practice to have a QR code on a business card. So I thought now is as good a time as any to address this great question! Now the really simple answer is, it depends. Let me explain.

QR codes have been more of a novelty for a long time, and up until recently, I felt like the QR code was just plain ahead of it's time. But, more and more, we find QR codes becoming a part of our lives as we see them popping up just about everywhere these days! So it would seem that time is finally catching up to this fun little piece of technology. As more and more people get smart phones, the QR code becomes easier to promote.

Another point I'd like to make is the fact that a QR code represents a new piece of technology, and no one wants to find themselves 'behind the times'! One more reason QR codes would make sense to use.

So as a Real Estate agent, should YOU have a QR code on your business card? My final point comes back to my original answer, that it depends! It depends on who your target audience is and what kinds of marketing strategies you're using. For example, if most of your clients are in a demographic that doesn't use smart phones at all, they might not even know what a QR code is! If you focus more on offline strategies to market your business, would a QR code really help you?

We sell business cards all the time that include a QR code, and for those clients that understand what it is and how it benefits them, the QR code can be a great addition. So if you're sitting on the fence with this one, just ask yourself if your marketing strategies and target audience fit with QR code technology.

I don't have a QR code on my business card.  I do have them occasionally on sign riders, depending on the property.  I don't create single property websites for short sales.  I do use them for traditional sales, because it matters.  Short sales you just want a contract, any contract you can submit to the bank and let them hash it out.  Traditional sales you want the best you can possibly get for your seller.

I am thinking about having a video produced on my business.  If I do that, I would put a QR code on my business card that leads to the video.  QR code destination has to provide value.

Morning Nic,  I also thought the QR codes would be a big hit.  I do see them used in quite a variety of applications but well below the levels I was expecting.

Yeah, QR codes have had a slow start, but with the growth in smart phone use, I definitely see value in using them as long as it makes sense for your marketing.

Thanks Nic for sending me an update on this question.  I just felt that QR code is more of a novelty and scanning it can be a fuss.. still, it makes your business card look cutting edge.  Then again, I completely agree with you - it depends on your target audience.  Why scan when they can simply type in your website's URL.  I think QR codes are great for a younger audience/demographic?  I may be wrong.
