Earlier this week, I met with a customer in Rye Brook who was interested in refinishing hardwood floors. The address sounded somewhat familiar but I didn't know the customer. When I walked in, I commented that we did work in house right by here, maybe next door. He explained that it was a rental and as I glanced at the kitchen, I knew I had been here before.
I asked if there was someone named Melissa who used to live here, and he was surprised and said yes, she did...that was 2 renters ago. I then asked if there was a bedroom back there that used to have carpet and now has hardwood and his eyes popped. I told him that we refinished those floors 3 years ago. I then proceeded to tell him how Home Depot had been there before me and gave an estimate of $2,500 to add hardwood to the floors...but they never checked to see if there was plywood under the carpet...because if they had, they would have realized what I did...she already had hardwood and all she needed to do was refinish them for $650!
He now wants to refinish the other rooms to match the bedroom.
When I pulled out our reference sheet he said, "I don't need any references...the floors speak for themselves." They still look beautiful after 3 years and 2 sets of renters. Needless to say, we are going to refinish the remainder of the floors this weekend.
