Ever hear of Ding Darling?

Do you like watching Mother Nature? One of the benefits we have by being in Florida is the vast quantity of State, National, and County parks which you can find throughout the state. Many of Florida's communities specifically set aside vast areas for wildlife, which I think is wonderful. I would venture to say that many other states are like this and if you live in an area of the U.S. which has alot of natural countryside, then you are very lucky too.

One National Park which I enjoy visiting the most can be found on Sanibel Island in Lee County, Florida. Ding Darling is located on the Northern end of the Island and has a 5 mile road which goes through it. This road meanders through the park giving visitors vies of many of the wetland and water areas to see wildlife. During the winter months is when you will see the largest diversity of wildlife.

A couple of my favorite birds to see in the park are the White Pelicans and the Rosetta Spoonbills. If you see a White Pelican next to a normal Brown Pelican you will be amazed at the size difference. A normal Brown Pelican is about 1/3 the size of a White Pelican. The pink birds to the right are Rosetta Spoonbills. From a distance many people are thinking they are looking at Flamingos, but they're not. The Spoonbills have a bill just as the name emplies, shaped like a spoon. These are beautiful birds.

Other animals which you can see in the park are Alligators and if you are lucky you might see the only known Crocodile in the park. You will often see Raccoons and many species of birds.

In addition to the main road, the park also has many walking trails which you can explore. In addition, many people ride bikes through the park.... a great way to get some exercise.

Next time you are in Southwest Florida, be sure to check out Sanibel Island and Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

I'm in the Daytona Beach area. I agree with you. It's awesome to be able to watch so much of nature, even right now, around Christmas time. The sky is still blue, the birds are still flying around, the river and ocean are gorgeous. It's great!

That house photo in your post is beautiful.
