A Real Amityville Horror in Toms River?

Last summer I wrote a blog about the famous home in Toms River that was used for the filming of "The Amityville Horror" being put up sale at 1.35 million (the home has since been withdrawn from the market) Outside filming wasn’t done at the house on Long Island, where a similar real-life story was supposed to have happened, but at the Toms River house, where a superstructure was built around portions of the home to make it look like the Amityville one.

GhostsWell, in a story similar to the Amityville Horror, a local couple is now suing their landlord for failing to disclose the house he was renting to them was haunted.

The couple moved into a three-bedroom ranch home in Toms River with two children. A week later, they fled the house after visits from the home’s otherworldly tenants. They reported coming home to find their possessions strewn about the house, doors opening and slamming in unoccupied areas of the house, lights turning themselves on and off, odd whispering at night and footsteps sounding from the kitchen. Family members also suffered bruises and a member of the family was briefly hospitalized due to panic attacks.

The couple filed a lawsuit against their landlord who in turn filed a countersuit accusing them of breaking their one-year lease. The landlord is accusing the couple of using “paranormal activity” as an excuse for the fact they owe $1,500 in monthly rent payments. The landlord also said none of the previous tenants ever claimed the house was haunted.

However, the couple point out that they would not have paid the $4,000 down payment on the property, advance rent for the first month and moving expenses, only to flee the home only a week after moving in.

What do you think?

Why can't we all just get along, people, ghosts, landlord, tenants and lawyers.

Good luck.

Sounds like a case of HE said, SHEET said.  I think this case doesn't have a ghost of a chance.  And I can keep going but this is just a "dead end" issue.

The landlord probably has a case. The tenants are aware of the house and are behind. Will be interesting to see the argument for the short sale.

Karl, if they are mere deadbeats, this is the most imaginative way I've ever seen for getting out of a lease!
