History of Bonita CA  more at Bonita Real Estate Blog

Bonita in San Diego County California is an unincorporated community in South County San Diego. Bonita, like most inland areas of South County San Diego was ranch land. Construction of the Sweetwater Dam began in November 1886 by Frank Kimball. The Sweetwater Dam was completed in 1888 creating the Sweetwater Reservoir still in use today contributing to San Diego's limited and precious water supply and used by Bonita, National City and Chula Vista. The Sweetwater Dam was the highest structure of the gravity arch style dam construction when it was completed. The dam was raised 15 feet in 1910-1911 increasing its capacity by 70%. In 1916 there were massive rains which caused the north side of the Sweetwater Dam to erode and break killing 8 people. The dam was later rebuilt. There are almost 5 miles of riding and hiking trails at the Sweetwater Reservoir filled with wild life and native plants.

Bonita to San Diegans is known as horse country. There are many small ranches and homes with horse facilities on them in Bonita. There are many places to ride a horse in Bonita like the Sweetwater Regional Park and around Rohr Park. The Sweetwater Regional Park not only has horseback riding but camping mountain biking and other activities as well. Rohr Park was given to the City of Chula Vista in 1966. Fred Rohr owner of Rohr Aircraft sold the land and the house (23 acres) for $60,000. Rohr Park has many great picnic areas and is a favorite place for Bonita residents to walk, jog, bike or horseback ride around.

Bonita has one main road "Bonita Road" and the town of Bonita is very small and quaint. Bonita has a charming feeling about it, almost like stepping back into old San Diego. Every year there is a Bonitafest in the town with a parade. We have been to this festival participated in it many times and we highly recommend going to the Bonitafest which is in September every year.

Real estate in Bonita is diverse, ranging from large horse properties to master planned communities like Bonita Woods, Bonita Downs, Bonita Glen, Bonita Highlands, Bonita Long Canyon, Emerald Ranch and Lynwood Hills.
