As a REALTOR During These Tumultous Times, I’m Glad to say I’m Still Here

As a REALTOR during these tumultous times, I’m glad to say I'M STILL HERE

The first time I saw the movie The Sound of Music, I was immediately mesmerized. It wasn’t just about the heartwarming story, the fabulous scenery, but also the many lessons learned from the incredible musical score.

As I move from various stages of my life, it seems that there was always a segment of my life that can be told by the Sound of Music soundtrack.

Lesson my father taught me

I was only Sixteen, going on Seventeen when I saw the movie, and  my life at that time seemed to only focus on having a boyfriend.

My father, on the other hand, had a different lesson he wanted to convey. To this day, he likes the song  I must have done something good. These words helped to guide me as I moved from various stages of my life.

“Nothing comes from nothing

Nothing ever could

So somewhere in my youth or childhood

I must have done something good.”

Laid off!

One of the most crushing blows is to be laid off after decades of working in the telecommunications industry. I had to say So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye to the only profession I ever had: marketing and sales.

Jobless, Homeless and Friendless

So I moved to the Bay Area in California -- literally jobless, homeless and friendless. And looking for  a sign as to what my next step should be. Being over 50 years old with very few job opportunities, I was faced with the challenge of what do I do next? A source of inspiration and words of truth: Climb Every Mountain.

Reaching deep into my psyche, my heart...just what is it that I like to do? What do I enjoy doing? I remember that as a child I loved looking at architecture books and models. And in my adulthood, living in Florida, I loved going to Parades of Homes and open houses. These are my very Favorite Things.

Becoming a REALTOR

And voila! It dawned on me that perhaps a new career in real estate is the next step. I poured all my energies into being a good REALTOR during one of the most tumultous periods in the early 2000s.  There were early signs of a looming downturn so I had to learn new skills and became a CDPE (Certified Distressed Property Expert). In 2008, the real estate industry was rocked by one of the worst economic disasters in modern history resulting in a tsunami of short sales and foreclosures.

And like so many of us, I have gone through the ups and downs of the market. It was quite literally, sink or swim.  But through persistence and sheer will power, I'm singing a different song. I’m glad to say that I’m still here.

Good times and bum times, I've seen 'em all and, my dear,

I'm still here.

Plush velvet sometimes,Sometimes just pretzels and beer,

But I'm here.

I've run the gamut. A to Z.

Three cheers and dammit, C'est la vie.

I got through all of last year

And I'm here.

Lord knows, at least I was there, And I'm here!

Look who's here!

I'm still here!

What a great analogy. I'm sure this is part of the movie challenge/contest, nice job.

Hi Pacita,  Ok I love the story, I love your persistence, but mostly I'm shocked that you are 50+.  So glad to hear you're still here in real estate!

Pacita,  I am so glad you are still here.  The lay off was a blessing although I am sure it did not feel that way at the time. Having been in real estate now myself for 9+ years, I cannot imagine doing anything else. I truly enjoyed reading your post!

Pacita great entry to thre movie contest!  it's funny how good things can develop out of tough/challenging situations - if we allow it.  And you certainly did and are doing more than surviving - you are thriving!

Kathleen --- being laid off was traumatic, but it was the catalyst and impetus to find something better. My only regret? Not having become a realtor sooner!

Wayne and Jean Marie -- bet you're singing the same song: I'm still here!

Anna --- thanks.  And you're right...we go through such adversity that we may not think at that time that we'll come through okay. But things do have a way of turning out for the best.

Pacita, very clever way to weave The Sound of Music and the songs in to your life. I think we all could do that. I feel like I've lived many lives already, and I'm glad you're still here!

Sound of Music has always been one of my favorites too.  Not only because it's such an inspiring story, but because it's the first movie I remember going to and I went with my grandmother.

John -- so many songs resonate. Ever have one of those times when breaking up with someone, it seems like every love song was written for us

Sharon -- I have bitter sweet memories of this movie, too. My brother asked me to join him and his girlfriend who brought her brother along as a chaperone. I was intended to distract the brother. Well, my brother and his girlfriend broke up, whereas her brother and I hooked up. He became my puppy love.
