Pets. We love them. They make us smile. They make us laugh. They make us cry sometimes. They can be so loveable. Sometimes unforeseen circumstances come up that would cause a person to be unable to keep their pet. Unfortunately, it has happened to me before. What happens if you can't find a new home for your pet?
Please do not dump your pet on the side of the road or at the entrance to someone’s ranch or horse boarding stable.
Just because someone has a ranch or stable does not mean that they will be able to care for another cat or dog. Most likely, the owners of the ranch or stable have already had a couple of pets abandoned on their property within the last year.
If you abandon your pet at a boarding stable or ranch, your pet could be at risk or it could cause problems.
Your pet might get run over before it is found. There might be a dog on the property that would kill a cat or another dog.
Your dog might chase or scare the horses. It could cause someone to get hurt. Abandoning pets at a ranch or horse stable is a bad idea.
(I took the above picture at the Colorado Horse Park in Parker, Co. Notice all three dogs are on leashes. Also notice that all three dogs were not interested in the horses being ridden.)
Take your pet to your local animal shelter. At an animal shelter, your pet will be fed and given shelter. Your pet will have a chance to find a forever home with a responsible family. The probability of finding a forever home will increase if you give the animal shelter staff your pet's background and make them aware of any behavioral issues. The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region serves the Colorado Springs area. Their website address is: http://www.hsppr.org/
Of course, if you want to add a pet to your family, please consider adopting from the animal shelter or a rescue organization.
