Renting a property remains a fascinating subject. I am amazed at how many people cannot answer the simple question of the title this post when put to them in the moment. How can you not know how many people in your family or who you will be living with? To the landlord or manager, this is a red flag. It says that you have a hidden agenda or are not sure of what you are doing
SHARING A PLACE
People are trying to downsize and conserve expenses and they discovered that pooling resources and sharing rooms is the way to go. However, they suspect that the landlord may not rent to 4 people in a one or two bedroom, so they dance around this subject...Planning to hide this will never work and can lead to eviction and litigation.
PETS FOR LAST?...DON'T
I have also noticed that people leave the fact that they have pets for last. In the interest of saving time, it should be brought up first. The vast majority of pets stay home during the day and night. Damage from their behavior is acted out on the rental unit. Landlords know this is and so should renters..UP FRONT. Mitigation measures must be discussed
TIPS FOR POTENTIAL RENTERS
Employment, credit, pets, amount of people, finances, reasons for moving and how soon you need a place are better off being addressed up front so that decisions can be made by all to either move forward or not wast anyone's time. Be prepared if looking for a place to rent to share personal information too.
