BBQ Safety Tip! “Warning Exploding Lighter”

Reblogger Kristin Hamilton CA REALTOR

I just had to re-blog this article from John McCormack as he had a near miss with a butane gas lighter and it was pretty scary.  I use these butane lighters on my outside barbecue and luckily this has never happened to me.

So glad John and his family are fine but read and learn what not to do!

BBQ Safety Tip! “Warning Exploding Lighter”

Here is a little BBQ safety tip people should seriously heed. Today my wife and I fired up the BBQ for a little lunch break.  I had been storing my long stem lighter underneath the cover of the side burner on the grill.  I lit the BBQ with that lighter and set it aside as we cooked up some Shrimp Kabobs and sat down on the patio to enjoy our meal and the gorgeous New Mexico BBQ Safety Tip Warning Exploding Lighterday.  About halfway through lunch we hear a very loud and very nearby BOOM! almost like a gunshot, we both jumped out of our skin then we hear a second sound of something hitting the air conditioner.  I jumped up thinking someone had thrown something over over the fence into our backyard but just as I was headed through the house I noticed a big chunk of the lighter & smaller pieces then realized the lighter had actually exploded and that second sound we heard was shrapnel finally hitting the A/C unit after being airborne a few seconds.  The photo is not how the remaining components of this lighter fell but placed where it originally began.  I never found the other parts and shards.

So the moral of the story and the BBQ Safety Tip is..”Warning Exploding Lighter” do not store your BBQ Lighter in the hot sun especially on a stainless steel BBQ Grill, it gets very hot and can and will explode!  I know, I know you're probably thinking Duhh and my bride thought the same.  Fortunately we were not any closer, if this had happened while cooking I feel certain one or both of us would have been injured to some degree.   I did learn a valuable lesson today although one I should have learned many, many years ago.  Be safe this summer and take heed to this BBQ Safety Tip “Warning Exploding Lighter”

I am fortunate enough to have mine hardwired to my house gas line and have built in electric starters.  That is the easiest way to go.

Hi Jeff,

Our island has a gas line but the barbecue starter doesn't always work so we just turn on the gas and light with the lighter. OMG, reading what John went through could have been so much worse. Thanks for stopping.

Hi John,

For years it was my duty to protect the public so I am still doing it the best I can. This was so scary just reading it and imagining how bad it could have been. Have a great week.

Hi John,

It must have been pretty scary for John and Debbie. It is definitely something we should all keep in the back of our minds when we are doing our summer barbecuing.
